Waiting for the new Harry Potter? Composing CONGRATULATIONS DA VINCI
CODE-messages? Playing computer games? Rereading the whole of the
Sluggy Freelance archive? So many possibilities...

Gone to discuss "The Da Vinci Code"? The LOTR movies brought in a lot of
new but relatively short-term contributors, I think.

I believe it might just have been the lighting. Besides he didn't actually
fly, he was merely wearing buffalo shoes.
There are no canonical texts supporting the wing theory.

Well, well -- congratulations ;)
I do admit that I didn't think that Europe was ready for a monster-rock
winner ;)

It's been more manageable, I agree (allowing me to handle a bit of my
back-log <G>). Christopher has been on holiday recently and isn't back
to his usual prolific self (exams time coming up, perhaps?), others
probably have other reasons for being less productive here: personally
I've been rather busy at work.

Might it have been the novelty factor? Or the shock factor? Vote for
that outrageous monster-rock group for a laugh?

It has been several years (thankfully) since I had to take any exams.
Seven to be precise. I too have a back-log of posts to reply to, but not
enough time at the moment.
As for activity levels in the newsgroups. You can monitor that via
Google Groups or that other newsgroup archive (some Microsoft thing I
think). Should be easy to see long-term trends. I've generally found
that the activity goes up and down quite a lot, but generally recovers
sooner rather than later.

Though I did have time to get that "Ring of Words" book I posted about a
few days ago! Looks fascinating. Will try and read it over the next few
days and post a comment or two.

Unlike many recent acts, Lordi were actually 'dressed' for the occation.
I don't think they raise issues, as much as point to them. They were the
only band (that I saw) that didn't make me want to swtich off my set.

Although Dan Brown is a lunatic. His position is analogous to Tolkien

All of those, except Maiar, are in the OED (well, in the case of ents,
it is the OE word that it was based upon). So obviously these _are_ all
real things... :-)

"Maia" in the singular is in the OED.
(Don't forget Keat's famous /Fragment of an Ode to Melian/:
"Mother of Luthien! and still youthful Maia!
May I sing to thee
As thou wast hymned on the shores of Esgalduin?
Or may I woo thee
In reconstructed proto-Sindarin?")

Huh? You think Dan Brown _believes_ it? It _is_ a work of fiction. What
Dan Brown _believes_ is that there are many people out there who _do_
believe in variations on the theme.

I've read that he claims that the backstory (essentially the stuff from
Holy Blood Holy Grail) is true. Maybe my source was wrong; if you have
a reference where he makes clear that the backstory is also fictional,
I'd be happy to stand corrected.

The backstory _is_ true - at least to the extent that "Holy Blood, Holy
Grail" wasn't even close to the origin of this version of the story. It's
had its believers as long as there have been Christians. Mel Gibson was
criticized for making a religious epic that was seen as anti-Jewish, not
for believing it was true. If Dan Brown actually believes it, he's no more
a lunatic than any other believer of anything other than the One True
Faith. Almost every Christian would consider him a heretic, but that's not
the same thing at all.
