You're right! Of the 104 times Rowling used the word "purple" in the six
books, 33 were in OotP!

Wonder what our friends at Cutting Edge Ministries would make of this.
I'm sure they would find some reason why purple is eeeevil. Maybe it's
the Devil's second favourite colour, after green.

Thanks! I did forget that one, even though I saw it. There were a few
other references that I omitted as repetitious.
Also, did anyone notice the unusual number of "two"s, most in the first
TWO chapters? (I didn't include all references here either...)
Harry moved two inches
Harry's head felt as though it was split in two (hit the window)
two purple hands
Two boxes of Honeydukes Chocolates
Mark Evans was beaten two nights ago
Harry's head felt as though it was cleaved in two (Dudley punched him)
Two Dementors
Harry read the MoM letter twice
Harry was interrupted on the count of two when he was threaten to spell
Vernon
Two seconds of ringing silence
The second MoM letter came twenty-two minutes after the first
Vernon thought Dudley gave the Dementors "the old one-two"
"Harry's two lives had somehow become fused"
Two lumps on Harry's head
Harry deftly sprayed two Doxys at once
Harry imagined his wand being snapped in two
Level Two, Department of Magical Law Enforcement
Two months of hurricanes
Two desks inside Mr. Weasley's small office
Fudge took two deep breaths before declaring Harry "cleared of all charges"
The new school year required two new textbooks
Ginny was knocked down two flights of stairs
Black escaped two years prior
two staff changes at Hogwarts
Harry wondered if he'd even have even two minutes of conversation with Cho
two drops of Hellebore
Harry was going to offer two detentions
Harry's detention was two hours
Sturgis lived at number Two, Laburum Gardens
Educational Decree number Twenty-two
(I'm bored, skipping many now...)
Two gargoyles flanked the staff room door
"The week... stretched across two universe, the one with Sirius in it,
and the other without"

Reading Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea series for the terms dark and light, or
variations thereof, is a worthwhile pursuit, because she uses these images
deliberately. Purple in Harry Potter on the other hand...were you just

If you have the means of doing arbitrary searches, could you look for
'bacon'? As a result of a thread a month or so ago that I should
probably leave well alone (Never tickle a sleeping Dragon), I would be
curious to know if there are documented episodes of Hermione eating
bacon. The closest I could find could be interpreted as her looking on
while Ron stuffed his face.

you mean I can use a computer to do the word count!!!
I used MS word with a DOC file. I also have them in PDF... I just tried it
with a "search" for the word "two" with Acrobat 7 and it came up the same
number... 104 results for the word "two" in book 1.
Try a search in Acrobat 4 and see if it works, otherwise download their
version 7 reader.

That's odd, my counts are much lower than yours, (though transcription
errors are always a worry). Ken, you're not counting words like...
fifty-two
Fleetwood's
forty-two
network
ninety-two
one-two
outworn
paintwork
seventy-two
trustworthy
twenty-two
two'd
two've
twoo
twos
untrustworthy
....or digit 2s & chapter titles, are you?

Of the 23 times bacon is mentioned... Hermione is mentioned several times as
being at the table where it was served... but it never states that she ate
it... there are cases where Harry, Ron, Fred and George are mentioned eating
bacon... Mrs. Weasley making bacon sandwiches for the group... serius making
bacon for the group.
So... while most every breakfast mentioned bacon as being served... there is
no proof that Hermione ate any.

I searched again after checking "whole words only" and it changed the count
from 104 to 103 but yes it does include compound numbers like fifty-two.

Since 52 is not equal to 2 that mustn't be allowed; you can easily get
round it by temporarily changing all "-two" to "Dtwo". You should also
change "chapter two" to "chapterStwo", before counting again. I get...
book 1 - 95
book 2 - 74
book 3 - 92
book 4 - 161
book 5 - 247 (!)
book 6 - 156
....which is several twos lower for each book, except with book 5.
