LCARS [message #267831] Do, 18 Mai 2006 19:24

Hello,

I am a computer programmer working on a dynamic integrated display for
programs which by function appears to resemble the fictious
specifications of the LCARS system.

The LCARS system is said to be a library access system, that uses
artificial intelligence to form an intuitive interactive display
available data and at the same time be able to allow the user to
efficiently input data (it is used to steer the ship after all).

I have searched trough many online references to the function of this
and also analyzed a number of episodes in which LCARS makes an active
appearance. However most of the time the LCARS displays contain nothing
but an assortment of numbers, which I could hardly identify as
intuitive, even if I knew what I cannot of the supposed underlying
technology.

I have also looked into the attempt of creating LCARS interfaces for
personal computers, but those do not have a spec of artificial
intelligence in them, have a lot of disfunctional esthetic-only
animations in them made to resemble the ones from StarTrek and are quite
frankly, unremarkable.

The core of the problem in creating a LCARS that matches the
capabilities of the one in the science fiction is simpler than you may
think. I am certain a person is capable of taking a structured data
report and formating it into a graphic form which is intuitive.

If you show me how you would do that, I will be able to program a
computer program to do the same. I can think of no better candidates to
help me with this particular challenge than Trek fans.

Here is the output of the existing application (it is a readable
structured report made of some example XML available online):

....If that were displayed on a LCARS terminal, how would it look?

Thanks in advance for any help.
