Coming home Sunday night from the Blues Jam, I turned onto the access
road to the short length of Hwy 44 that leads to the Broken Arrow
Expressway, which, in turn, leads to my area of town. As I turned right
and accelerated, I hit an oil patch probably left by a mechanical mishap
of some sort. The Victor-MG spun out and flew down the (very steep)
embankment and hit a wall at the bottom of the slope, damaging the left
rear fender, a place on the left front fender, bending the rear bumper
and whacking my face into the steering wheel. My nose is quite sore
still and I am still getting dried blood out of it. My left shoulder is
sore for some reason. My insurance should cover all repair costs and the
nose and shoulder will eventually heal, so it's not a big deal, but it
was a bit of a shock. I was a very good racing driver some years back
and the skills I gained have saved me a number of times, but on this
occasion, there was literally no time to react, nothing to do but ride
it out.
Please drive carefully and with full attention to the task at hand.
-Rocky

Well, that works for me, on this occasion at least. But now that we /know/
Rocky's okay, I have a question:
This is an American car, right? And it skidded on oil, right? And it's an
American car, right? And it went plunging down an embankment, right? And
it's an American car, right? And it SLAMMED into a wall, right? And it's an
American car, right?
So - why didn't it explode?

It's not an American car, obviously. He said it was an MG, which is
English. Well, I recall him mentioning that it's a custom build, with bits
and bobs from different places, but nominally it's English.
Probably save his life, that.
Which is good.

Rocky's cars are like the minis in the italian job that bounced most of
the way down the mountainside more-or-less intact, not the poncy sports
cars that disintegrated on the first bounce.

With all that rain there's been there recently I'm surprised that there
weren't more accidents, certainly we saw a few near misses whilst I was
over in your neck of the woods, mind you that maybe down to the person
driving the truck we were in lol. Glad you're okay and hopefully your
insurance company won't argue the toss like my mother-in-law's is.

But this wasn't the Mini but the Victor MG which is a MGTF replica with a
fibreglass bodyshell which you would expect to break pretty badly
especially an area like the rear wing if shunted into a wall like that.
Fortunately fibreglass can be very forgiving if you hit it at the right
angle and the chassis will add a lot to the structural strength. This is
why the Metrocab I saw shunted clear across the Marylebone Road last year
was undamaged while the car that hit it was write off.
It's great to see that Rocky's relatively undamaged. That's the most
important thing.

Ah. So it's basically the motor-car version of a Firefly. That explains why
Rocky came through with nobbut blood and bruises.

Probably due to the absence of a film crew. I have always assumed it's
something to do with film cameras, because it's pretty rare for a crashed
car to burst into flames except when they are being filmed.

I'm glad you and the car are not too badly hurt this time. If accidents that
you don't contribute to the cause of are waiting to happen to you, then it's
even more important to be careful.

Wow - Stacie, you are the *LAST* person I would expect to presume to speak
for this group...However, I believe you are safe enough in doing so in this
case. You certainly speak for me! :)

For Boscone is more likely...

Well, it's *in* America (which is the most important thing), and also it's
being driven by an American, and by all accounts it was cobbled together in
an American garage. Just putting a little MG badge on it doesn't make it
British.

Oh, of COURSE! That actually makes sense - because film is highly flammable,
right? At least, it was in MP (one of TP's finest in the early canon).
You've taken a great weight off my mind. For a long time now, I have just
kind of assumed that the Cabal has been going round all the cars (and
computers) in the USA, attaching explosives and trembler detonators. I was
kind of wondering when they were going to get round to the UK...

I assume that what happens is that here we don't make as many films, so
the film stock never reaches critical mass and as a result is less prone
to cause crashed cars to explode. Though that begs a serious question.
Since they make an enormous number of films in India, why aren't Bollywood
films full of crashing elephants bursting into flames?

Be fair, when was the last time you saw a car crash and explode in a
musical?

Aha, the vibrations must do something that prevents
combustion.

Actually, I think it's because elephants are incombustible. Celluloid
is, however, and is probably contagious. Since celluloid was invented
to replace ivory, I suspect that the presence of all the elephants
cancel the effect out somwhow.
Probably because of quantum.

When did you last see an elephant crash, or an elephant going off a cliff?
Or a car exploding unless it first collided with something?
You need a catalyst. *Then* it will explode. At least three times.
(Is this safe to discuss, or are we preempting pterry's writing of a
Muntabwood book now?)

Although a mere Canuck, I feel safe in answering this one:
Rocky wasn't on television at the time.
Besides which, the Victor-MG is essentially a British car.
