This is really a belated birthday, but May 9th is actually the birthday of
the late Pedro Armendariz (1912-63), the actor who played Kerim Bey on FRWL.
His other film work is also commendable, but his real tragedy came while
filming FRWL, when he learned that he was dying from cancer caused by
radiation poisoning. Once the Broccoli/Saltzman team got wind of this, they
altered the shooting schedule to finish all the Kerim Bey scenes in the
film. Armendariz finished all his scenes and turned in the best performance
of his acting career, despite his unhealthy medical condition. He
ultimately chose to commit suicide rather than allow his cancer to kill him.
Pedro Armendariz contracted his cancer while working on "The Conqueror"
(1956) with John Wayne, filming on locaton at sites adjacent to the Nevada
Test Site in the USA, where atomic bomb testing was taking place.
Radioactive fallout from years of U. S. atomic bomb testing contaminated
areas in the states of Nevada and Utah, where the Duke, Armendariz, and the
rest of the cast and crew were busy shooting. All fell victim to
radioactive cancer, although some died off quicker than others. In Pedro's
case, he learned his condition while working on FRWL. Wherever you are
right now, Pedro, thank you for gracing us with your presence as Kerim Bey -
you are a definite class act, and we salute you.

"I've led a particularly fascinating life. Would you like to hear about
it?"
-Pedro Armendarizas as Kerim Bey, FRWL-

Didn't his son play el presidente in LTK or something?

His son, Pedro Armandariz Jr., was cast by Cubby as Presdent Hector Lopez of
Isthmus, in LTK. The younger Armendariz also served as an assistant
director on that film, but was not credited for it.
