I thought Miles' book was ok, a better read than Mother! IMO. Are
there any Zappa bios (besides The Real FZ Book) that do NOT become an
annotated discography? I guess he spent his life fighting to get his
work out there but these damn bios get so tiring with "then joe left
the band and bill joined. then they played here. then they went
there. then he released this. then he released that...."

Did FZ ever let his guard down and actually accept a "friend"? Is
there a bio out there that goes deeper than his stage persona??

I can imagine him managing his MySpace site. "Do you really want to deny all
selected?"

Although I think Creem's review of FZ (not the book) was pretty bad, I think
that Miles' book was the first that had the guts to be critical of Frank.

If there are any factual errors (other than dates etc) of Miles' description
of Frank, I would like to hear them. But I feel he was pretty correct -
Frank was obsessed with women, and was a pretty greedy person (regarding
money). And sometimes just stupid.

Many times it seems Frank said controversial stuff in interviews just to
make headlines and upset the interviewer, since a lot of times he said one
thing, and the next week the complete opposite.

One example is the way Frank complained if his musicians partied and drank
booze (or used drugs) on the road, the complained that the Wazoo guys just
played chess (and did not party). He also said that it's no fun to play to
US crowds who just want to get wasted and see strange stuff on the stage,
but then complained that the European crowds were too boring since they just
listened and didn't act crazy... ("We're here to entertain, people like to
have a good time...)

Several times Frank said that education and reading are useless and boring,
later he said that education and going to the library are very important.

I think that Frank loved being on the spotlight and being controversial, and
many times he would contradict himself and say "strange" stuff just shock
people.

So yes, I think Miles' book is pretty good, showing the ugly side of the
man. Doesn't mean I don't love his music - just means that he wasn't an
angel, or sometimes even a very nice man to people around him, including his
own family.

At least once he said something to the effect that "if you want to get
laid, go to highschool/university, but if you want to get educated, go
to the library". Which i interpret as criticising the condition of the
education-system rather than education itself.

But i agree that he may have changed his mind from time to time (which
isn't a bad thing itself, too :)

As long as they didn't use drugs and were able to play his music
accurately, FZ didn't criticize his musicians for partying. In fact,
he encouraged it.

That complaint was actually about the first 1973 band, the one with
Jean-Luc Ponty.

Geez, now I'm going to have to read this book.

FWIW, Michael Gray, Nigey Lennon and (to a lesser extent) Ben Watson
were also critical of Frank.
