OK, let's try some discussion for a change, cmelak or not cmelak;)
I used to listen to Zappa like maniac in the 70s and 80s, then, right after
his death I stopped and practically never came back.
All of the suuden I had this urge to listen to FZ again and obviously I
found whole lot of a new music being available.
The most prominent item seemed to be a famous LATHER cd. Praised and hailed
by many...unknown to me....So I bought it.
And the problem is that I think it is a crappy record. It is obviously "done
on demand" and don't be mislead by all this "FZ notes on the napkin"....It
is a loosely connected pile of old tapes, of differently mixed music,
visibly stitched together to fill 3 discs and to correspond with that NAPKIN
NOTES.
Its portions are great, some fragments are really interesting, but as a
whole, it SUCKS. And I don't see any reason in copying Sleep Dirt or Studio
Tan on another album with different title...
What do you people think? I felt cheated by FZ family, because THEY are
behind this project, I believe.

FZ played Lather on the radio in 1977 in precisely the same form (aside
from the post-Peccary bonus cuts) in which it appears on the CD.
As far as the opinion that "as a whole, it SUCKS," not much to say
except that I disagree.

Well, Frank was always fighting with WB and his stints on air do not add up
to the coceptually cohesive album.
This thing is so different from song to song! Does not keep the tone, the
color, dynamics are off from song to song, this is just a loosely compiled
bunch of different recordings.
And Frank, he would play Satan on the radio just to piss off WB, who in this
quarrel were right, i think, anyway;)

The dispute between FZ and Warner Brothers was not over whether they
should release ZINY, Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt, and Orchestral Favorites
(on the one hand) or Läther (on the other).
It was over whether they would honor the terms of his contract--which
would have required them to release the four separate albums (ZINY, ST,
SD, OF) within six weeks of delivery of the masters.

You need to listen to more Zappa, to get a better sense of the conceptual
continuity, project/objectness of it all. Läther is the best/largest
example/synopsis of this phenomenon. If you just don't like it, that's fine,
too.

L=E2ther album is the better thing Gail did for the memory of his
husband for a long time. The uncut tunes versions are better than
original Warner Bros Lp and sounds like post-mortem revenge . And what
a joy to listen to FZ answer in "un-censured" version of "Honey, Don't
You Want A Man Like Me?": -"fuck U very much!"
WB sucks anymay!

or Apostrophe(') or FZ Meets the MOP.....?

There are more tracks on L=E4ther that are cut compared to the Warner
Bros. versions than the other way around.
Shorter on L=E4ther:
Black Page #1
Flambay
Spider of Destiny
Filthy Habits
The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution
Longer on L=E4ther:
Titties & Beer
Adventures of Greggery Peccary (slightly longer ending)
Punky's Whips (if you want to count it as being zero seconds long on
the standard-release Zappa In NY LP).

I didn't count that since it's not the same performance as the one used
on ZINY.

I thought most of it was, but I've never compared them directly.

More? I listened to Zappa (almost exclusively) from 1976 to 89/90.
I don't think I need more:))

I know, but I love his other records, so why all of the sudden such dislike
for this particular album?
I just don't see much concept behind it besides word 'Laaather' uttered from
time to time...
