The Plural of "Horcrux" [message #265022] Mi, 10 Mai 2006 22:44

"Is the plural of 'Horcrux' 'Horcri?'"

"No, the plural of 'Horcrux' is 'Horcruxes', as demonstrated by the
eponymous chapter in 'Half-Blood Prince.'"

It's bizarre how some people pluralize Latin or pseudo-Latin words. I
think "horcruxes" makes perfect sense, as does "horcruces." (Consider
"Las Cruces," for instance.) But "horcri"? That '-x' is sticking out
there like a thorn; it's kind of hard to ignore it.

I do wonder sometimes how Rowling came up with the term.

Horcrux appears to be a third declension word in which case in Latin its
plural would be Horcruces. (Crux is a real Latin word meaning cross and is a
third declension word with the plural cruces).

Horcri would be the plural of Horcrus(2nd declension)

In any case Horcrux is a made up English word so Horcruxes is the plural and
anyway, if you make up a word you should have the right to make up its
plural.
