Yes, I did buy it. It isn't as strong as the original audio-plays, but
it was the first contact with Douglas Adams' works. The memories of
listening to the radio late at night twenty-five years ago was
reason enough to buy it.

I tend to disagree on this one... (oh, yes). I like the dutch
radioplay better then de english version. I know it's frowned upon :p

The memories are the same, staying up late, too late for my mums
liking. Listening in bed, in the dark with my headphones on.
Transported for twenty minutes to a universe that made so much more
sense...

Seriously, Albert Heijn is a perfectly normal dutch name... Amro Bank
isn't. It just sounds like it could be a perfectly normal dutch name.

The first time I read Douglas Adams' work, it was in about 1984 (I may
be a few years off), and it was in Dutch!

The first translation was done with 'Hugo Veld' (Arthur) and 'Amro
Bank' (Ford) in it.

Last year, a new translation was started. The first book had 'Amro' and
'Hugo' for the names. The second book, however, which got me terribly
mad, had 'Ford' and 'Arthur'.

Later in the book, I found the expression 'niet uit het dent laten
slaan', for me, an unknown expression. Until it dawned on me that
Hugo's last name is 'veld' and 'niet uit het veld laten slaan' is a
perfectly normal beast. Uhm, expression. I _think_ the publisher doing
the re-publishing got into trouble for using the original translated
names and did a search/replace on the book's text... Also, they missed
a 'Theo's' as well (Marvin is/was called Theo in the Dutch version).
And a few other bits. The first two times, 'tea' was translated as
'coffee', switching back to 'tea' after that. Lovely continuity, guys!

I don't think book 3 has been released yet, but since I already have
the first 2 books of the re-translation, I guess I'll 'have' to buy
them as well...

It has been since the end of the eighties. I've never really thought
about how easy it was to change my name to Amro. It was never
intentional... It just happened.

Somewhere in the mid ninenties the goverment changed some rules and
since then there was this tikbox on al kinds of papers and forms
asking for your "calling name" (roepnaam) instead of your "christian"
name (doopnaam).

I answered thruthfully. And it stuck.

There are offcourse loads of other people called " Amro " or " Amr "
but they live mainly in Iran or Irak. [1]

I'm trying to think of something that would as comically not a normal
name in the USA as Ford Perfect or Amro Bank. The problem is that we
have such absurd peoples names in real life that it's hard to top it
with fiction. For example, I just got an email from Lake Trout, who
is an advertising manager for the LA Times. I kid you not.

The other day I heard somebody named Mailbox Tree Dirt interviewed on
the radio. Mailbox Tree Dirt explained he changed his name because
nobody would take him seriously with his birth name. He changed it
to Doctor Something Jewish (that wasn't the name, that's what I remember
it sounding like). He took Doctor as his first name. He never got a
Ph.D or anything like that. He just liked the sound of "Doctor".

(at least the dead tree version), are you planning to get an early bird-
discount for your 2006-taxes, or is this something else?

Ah no... this was for my extremly smal busines as a webdesigner. I
allways keep forgetting to close it down and the taxoffice allways
keeps reminding with a fine because I didn't fiil in the form on time.

But this year was different. Because it was the first time everyone
was obliged to do it E-Lek-Tron-Ik-Aly, they send a fine for not doing
it on time. And a few days later a letter explaining that they would
waive the fine, if you filled in the form on the website before the
end of May

Or maybe it is the same....

Ah yes, the weird attempt of our goverment to reduce the paperwork
for small businesses, resulting in more paperwork for everyone.
