| OT: Archived Posts Question [message #263287] |

I was recently asked a question about Usenet that I can't answer and was
hoping to get input from some of the more technically savvy people here.
I've seen people in other newsgroups revive threads that are sometimes over
a year old. How do they do this? Most servers only retain posts for 30-60
days and Google Groups, while they archive, will not allow replies to posts
older than 30 days. As I said, this question was recently posed to me, but
at the same time, it might be fun to pull up an ancient thread or two every
now and then to see how things have changed over the years. When Brett used
to post AFS history, it was a real blast.

The server I'm using (Giganews) has a retention of almost three years.
Have a look at the headers of those posts, to see which news server the
poster is using.

You can of course simply copy the old message text and subject from
Google Groups, and quote them in a brand new message. Obviously it
wouldn't continue the thread for those who read newsgroups that way,
but then since few servers keep old messages there is likely to be few
people folllwoing old threads anyway. :-)
