What is your opinion of the coming M:I III? The first two had plenty of
exciting moments, but their plots were so murky and convoluted that I
could not understand them.

Murky and convoluted, but Philip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant as the
villain.

Seriously. Brilliant

The Bond people shoulda got him.*

Tom Zielinski
"...Bond's eyes narrowed. He knew, at some point, he would have to slay this
particular dragon. He settled back in his chair, removing a Morlands' three
ring special from the gunmetal cigarette case. As he waited for the
delicious Balkan/Turkish blend to take effect on his lungs, he reflected
that four minutes to de-fuse a bomb in one's head is quite Blofeld-esque..."

*All credit to Mac as prognosticator on PSH as a great villain.

--- What does it say about American society when something as lowly as
TV viewers used to be smart enough to follow a literately-written and
clever series in the 60s without paying a cent for it and today
cinema-goers are eager and willing to pay $10 for murky and convoluted
plots that bear absolutely not even a smidgen of a semblance to what
the TV series was all about. It says that Americans have greatly
devolved on the intellectual ladder, and screenwriters and producers
along with them. Haven't seen the film and don't intend to because the
previews alone show how stupid it looks. Hell, the previews even make
the Casino Royale preview look like Citizen Kane by comparison.

i take some credit for PSH as a great villain, mentioned in a previous
post on here about who they should get to play LeChiffre in CR. this
is back a couple of years ago, if i recall correctly. but i think mac
did wax more elloquently than i on the subject in the same thread.

as for MI, we stayed away this weekend. tom cruise is truely not worth
the price of admission, ving rhames and PSH notwithstanding. (i mean,
when AMC is advertising the poseidon adventure as the original cruise
from hell, can you really take the guy seriously?) i will await its
appearance on free cable movies in twelve months.

--- Spy faves include: Definitely the first 4 of the Connery Bonds and
Lazenby's OHMSS, first season of Man from UNCLE and to a lesser extent
its last half-season, first three seasons of Mission: Impossible, the
half-season of Blue Light, the half-season of Five Fingers, the Diana
Rigg episodes of The Avengers, Danger Man, both the half-hour and hour
series, The Prisoner, the first two-to-three seasons of the quasi-spy
The Equalizer, the two episodes of The Fifth Corner before it got
prematurely yanked, The Ipcress File, North by Northwest, Notorious, I
even liked The Second Best Secret Agent in the Whole Wide World and the
two Our Man Flint films, Three Days of the Condor and, more recently,
the two Bourne films. Just to name a few. If it's done right, it's
done right. Unfortunately, they just haven't been doing them right for
about the last two decades, along with a lot of other genre films.

--- I hope you understand that the film series bears absolutely no
relation whatsoever to the TV series other than the M:I title. One is
actually a spy show with clever scripting, the other is actually a huge
mirror for a star's narcissism.

He's a grumpy old man. You know the type -- the old fella in front of you
at the check-out telling everyone and no one how things were much better in
the old days. Basically, if he isn't complaining about something, he isn't
happy. Unlike the grocery line though where you're forced to listen to his
unrelenting negativity about everything, you can killfile him here (unless
you're on google groups, in which case I guess you get what you pay for).

A bit like DAD then?? :) I didn't really enjoy the second MI film (I'd
have to watch it again though to really pinpoint why -- I liked the idea of
a virus, so maybe it was the face masks, or just the fact it was set mostly
here in Australia, which had me looking for locales rather than enjoying the
film), but I'll be giving MI:III a go in the next few weeks.

cheers

I saw MI:3 tonight. I'd say it was the best of the three. Some of the
twists were a bit predictable and they couldn't help themselves using more
rubber masks (ARGH!), but it held together for the most part, and was
certainly entertaining.

I agree with you that the first half was better than the second.

(minor spoiler) Did Davian's escape take place on the same bridge that was
used in Licence To Kill and True Lies?

And just for the record (though I have said it a few times since 2002), I
thought the first half of DAD (ie up to the point Bond arrives in Iceland)
as great and the second half as crap.

cheers

I would prefer the murky plot, particularly of the first, which actually
has some suspense, to the straight up action drama of the second.

Who's directing this one? Anyone good? I love John Woo, but still, that was
way too Hollywood Action Film for my tastes, even though it was good.

A few titles I don't know there, and one or two I do know but haven't
seen in so long I've forgotten them. Excellent taste in espionage
thrillers. I daresay we'd agree on a lot of things on that score.

>> Anyway, I enjoyed MI3, The first half was great - the second half was
>> a bit dodgy, but overall great fun.
>
> --- I hope you understand that the film series bears absolutely no
> relation whatsoever to the TV series other than the M:I title. One is

You're right about that. Teh movies are not liek the TV show. I don't
even know if they ever could have been. That said, I really quite liked
the first M:I film, and felt it had a great deal of the suspense such an
enterprise had to have to justify its return, even if in film as opposed
to TV. It wasn't quite as hard nosed as Ronin, shot around the same time
with a similar look and feel (including the ensemble cast), but it wasn't
embarrassing either. And not as clunky as Heat, which had good points,
but should have been better.

Basically, a lot of CIA/MI6/Interpol/KGB type suspense films from that
era (80-95) were still fairly mired in Cold War drama, and weren't
terribly sexy. Great films, and tense as hell. One of my faves from that
period was Gorky Park. Not a super spy in sight. Just international
intrigue, murder, betrayal, risky sex and suspense in Cold War Russia.

But I was one of maybe 17 people watching. I imagine you were one of the
others. Tom Zielinski was probably there too, I'd bet. Point is, I'll
take a stiff two fingers of single malt over a sugary cocktail any day,
but I certainly don't mind if it's served to me by a curvaceous brunette
with dark eyes and a warm smile. I'll drink it either way, but the
brunette will make it go down smoother.

The second M:I film was fun, but really was Tom's ego and testosterone
taking over. It stopped being a suspense film and became a summer
blockbuster. What a waste of a great idea. All that Chimeara/Bellerophon
biowarfare stuff was classic espionage. Beautiful. And they had to go
turn it into a jockfest, starring Tom Cruise as Sylverter Stallone. Sad.

I suspect you're letting your allegiance to the original series affect
your ability to see anything good in the films. I won't deny that they
strayed from the flavour and style fo the TV shows. But they started off
with some pretty solid suspense and some good acting, and great sets.
Really all you can hope for in a Hollywood movie. And at least none of
them pulled out an M-60 and started mowing everyone down.

Okay, done badgering. Just wanted to counterbalance the sway of regulars
who take exception to some of the things you say around here. I don't
doubt I'd catch that flack too if I posted here more often.

That's true. I remember you were one of the more vocal dissenters when DAD
came out. You would also have reached your conclusion before me, as the
film opened here in Australia about a month later than it did in the UK.

I'm just noisy and opinionated <g> (but also grateful I wasn't the only
one, and hope our opinions have had some effect on the next movie)!

If I weren't married and I was into three-ways with strangers that included
another guy, you'd both be in trouble.

But...er...that's not...uh...the case...

Oh I'm sure came across our posts and, concluding we sounded sane (in
comparison to other posters like 'sc*jo', 'fish' and 'redoctober90' anyway),
decided Bond 21 should be more like the first half of DAD.....

I hope they listened to my other suggestions too. One of those was to make
a film similar to Raymond Benson's 'High Time To Kill' (just for a change
from meglomaniacs and laser beams), and the other was to have someone
(perhaps Le Chiffre if he escapes in CR?) puts a price on 007's head,
forcing Bond to ground as assassins try to cash in on the reward. Maybe.

cheers

Today I watched MI: III; it was OK, but its use of the
spy-chief-who-is-really-a-traitor cliche was disappointing. I'm still
peeved at Mr Phelps being made into a traitor in the first MI movie.
