They look very photoshopped to me. Not well done at all.

Awful. Geezus, you'd think they'd put a little more pride into the cover
images. I can't think it costs any more money.
Lazy. Apathetic. And you know what? I'll think twice before purchasing,
simply because of this issue. Check that, perhaps I won't buy at all.
Tom Zielinski
"...Bond's eyes narrowed. He knew, at some point, he would have to slay this
particular dragon. He settled back in his chair, removing a Morlands' three
ring special from the gunmetal cigarette case. As he waited for the
delicious Balkan/Turkish blend to take effect on his lungs, he reflected
that he's serious..."

They're...trying too hard, IMHO. Figures...I held off on getting
the second and third 007 R1 sets (until I couldn't find the damn
things any more) because I knew these were coming, and...hmmmmmm.
I've seen uglier designs, usually on Z-movie covers...

Awful...Can you believe people actually get paid for stuff like this?
Why not just use the original poster designs if they have no other
imagination?

tom, we all know that you are taking a stand for truth, justice and the
american way here, but those of us who regularly read your postings
also know that thunderball is your favorite bond, and that the ultimate
deluxe edition will contain the tv documentary from nbc, full length,
and the doc on how to blow up a ford. so, given those two additions, i
find it difficult to believe you will not purchase at least that one
title for your collection.
as for me, i am awaiting the bond movie chip versions to be implanted
in my head.

Hmmn. Well, the covers are a bit busy, with those greytone montages and
the colour collages behind Bond in the foreground. I think they would
have looked sharper if the montages had been pale transparencies on white
instead of dark transparencies on black. However, the central images are
strong ones, and the basic layout is quite sharp, from a modern design
point of view. (I make my living doing commercial graphics)
The photos are obviously dated, and there's really not much anyone can do
to make those match up properly with a lot of the footage material behind
them. The lighting of each of those promo pics is different, and really
does odd things to the overall feel of the compositions. Too much
contrast in this one, not enough in that one. But by and large, they're
pretty good, especially because they DIDN'T much with the main photos.
I don't mind the photoshop colouring behind the colour photos too much
(those old movie posters didn't really do much different until the 80s
anyway. If anything, the bold colours harken back a little), but I'll
have to see them up close to decide if the graphic artist was being lazy
and did something slapdash, or actually did their damned job.
Most of the Moore photos DO seem to be out of sequence, chronologically.
I'd have to go back and look at the orignal promos, but I think I can see
that even here. However, compositionally, they selected the best images
of Moore to go with those particular collages. I would imagine a fair bit
of that was done mix and match style. The lighting and the poses are the
key there.
That said, I don't care much for the DAD colour image. I really don't
need to see another shot of Halle trying to convince me she's the new
Ursula Andress. All of the other colour collages are fairly dynamic and
exotic looking, even thought hey clearly are collages of existing photos
and captures. The DAD one looks like they used the CGI Halle Berry, and
the bright light on Brosnan makes him look like a cutout was dropped in
the foreground. I see a little of that with one or two of the others, but
not nearly as bad as here.
Ultimately though, I wouldn't have expected them to actually go in and
create all new, unrecognizable artwork. It would be more intersting, but
I certainly wouldn't expect it at this late stage. This is Sony's first
chance to milk the cow, and of course they want to maximize recognition
and keep it tight and modern, even if they use the classic logos.
The important thing to remember is the medium that these are going to be
printed on could make a huge difference. Some print processes, even
today, really make a familiar image look pretty strange to eyes who have
been looking at old, dark, dull photos for too long. These photos are
actually quite a bit more vivid than they've looked in years. Not
'photoshopped' (as in 'airbrushed') so much as cleaned up. probably
redeveloped from the original negatives, or perhaps recomposited from
scans of original photographic prints.
No, over all, it's not as bad as you think. Wait until you see them in
person. I have a feeling they'll look much better in your hand than you'd
expect.
That said, if they just stick prints into those plain old plastic pouches
in standard DVD shell cases, that really will look bland. All depends on
whether Sony goes cheap or goes to town.
Lee Edward McIlmoyle,
thinks they're a tad busy, but otherwise, not too bad
