An interesting situation [message #261561] Fr, 05 Mai 2006 00:40
Dreamseeker
Just within the last few weeks I have found at least one, possibly two
other dragons who go to my school, but they don't know each other, they
don't know of Alt.Fan.Dragons or anything of the sort, and they don't
know that I'm one of them. I doubt they even realize how many of us
there are. First I'm going to find out for sure if I'm right about the
second, probably by means of a random, out-of-the-blue question (if she
thinks I'm crazy, she won't be the only one), then I think I should
talk to them both. At least mention this place and such. Interesting
situation though, ne?

Sure is. Let us know how it goes :)

How do you know they're dragons, anyway?

On 04 May 2006, Dreamseeker was found to have scratched this message on a

If you know them well enough, slip them a note (or an email) with our url
on it, and then talk to them about it in a few days..... But that's just
me, I tend to be withdrawn in person, unless I know the person (yes, Hespa,
I know I wasn't withdrawn with you and Nicolai, but that was a rare
occasion).

If you're a good at stealth, I would say to write down AFD links on
slips of paper, then put it on their persons when they're not looking.
If not, I would just try and catch them in a situation when noone's
around. Casually ask them about what they like, if they're interested
in fantasy, then perhaps range onto the topic of dragonkind.

I must wonder if it would work though. I must have looked at at least
several dozen web pages with links to AFD before I ran into it by
other means and then realized what all those links were... ok, i'm slow.

One of them is in my modern dance group, and we've become friends. All
three of the other people in my group have very animilist
characteristics. One thinks of herself as a fox and the other as a
cat. I found that out early on, but what the third was I didn't know
until I overheard multiple comments between them and then, when it was
already obvious, asked her myself. That was just yesterday. She said
yes, then explained herself by saying she role-played as a dragon so
much that she actually thought of herself as one, and it was the same
for the other two. I casually said that I understood and that I had
hardly ever bothered role-playing as my dragon form. I just /was/.
She didn't show much reaction, just an agreement of sorts. I did
mention AFD before that, after the first comment that showed that she
liked dragons, but she didn't seem very interested.
I'm still not sure about the other. She admitted to being obsessed
with dragons after I commented on an essay she did about them. She's
not very talketive unless you get her on a subject she really likes and
feels free to talk about. She's the one I think would be easiest to
figure out with a question out of the blue. That's how another dragon
I met a couple years ago found out about me. We'd been talking about
videogames on the first and only time we met. He mentioned a game with
dragons, I said, "ooh, I love dragons," and without missing a beat he
asked, "are you a dragon?" and, since if someone asks that, they are
obviously either a dragon themself or a friend of one, I just said yes.

A different aside to this is that not everyone is big on newsgroups or the
internet in general. So don't be too surprised if you get disinterest, not
because of the topic but the medium.

I'd go for casually mentioning it rather than a note. Letters, even casual
ones, are taken more seriously. Just asking randomly in conversation is
easier to gloss over if it doesn't go so well.
