Not sure if anyone here is interested, but Wintersmith is listed
on amazon.co.uk, including the cover.

Now my question is why do they feel the need to made buying a Pratchett
more attractive? Or is it that they have an overstock of Tom Holt? :-)

At a guess, purely automated. The computer has spotted a common pairing
of Pratchett and Holt and offers it as a bargain. It is the sanma shstem
as "peoplw who bought ... also bought ...". Is the sum of the two prices
any greater than the two prices separately?

And I would not (without impugning either author) have described this
Tom Holt book as an ideal companion for this Terry Pratchett Boot as the
audiences are intended to be entirely different.

I've looked at this before... and the 'perfect partner' deals don't
save any more money than buying them indivudually on amazon - I think
its all just part of their general recomendations system.

As for a connection between Holt and Pratchett... I think Holt
referenced terry in one of his books... although it might have been
Robert Rankin...

Rankin may well have referenced Pterry as well, but Holt
certainly has; Faust Amongst Equals features a damned soul
whose punishment for meeting authors and saying how much he
liked their *earlier* work is to read the earlier works for
eternity. "It's the bit where the tourist meets the wizard. I
used to like that bit."

Amazon would. "Funny-ish authors from Britain" for $200, Alex.

Well, all 3 are on my "must buy new books on sight" list. Actually they
*are* that list.

They are both writers of large numbers of humorous fantasy novels. Yes,
this is like pairing Orwell with Lafontaine because they both wrote a
book involving animals and moral lessons, but when did reason ever stop
a salespitch?

My point is that it is, IMO, purely automated. The software has detected
a large number of people have bought both Pratchett and Holt, and
therefore offers that pairing. No salesman came within miles of it, only
a large database. And certainly no reason (a concept not usually
associated with either salesmen or databases).

I'd go along with this - it reminds me of how I went into W.H.Smiths
around Xmas time and New year, to buy their 3 for the price of 2 PTerry
paperbacks. Each time I got to the cash desk, the cashier serving me would
just look at the books I was buying and ask if I also wanted to buy a copy
of the new Harry Potter Novel - aaaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhh!!!!

All the best

Much like Google Groups listing alt.books.tom-holt as "related to"
AFP, then.
