Tom Hanks - Bond Fan [message #256985] Mi, 03 Mai 2006 04:07

Was watching Letterman last night, with guest Tom Hanks. Quite a funny
interview, they played off each other nicely. Hanks seemed a bit frantic
though - it crossed my mind more than once that he had either overdosed on
caffeine or some other stimulant (which shall remain unidentified)
beforehand. I've always liked Tom Hanks; have found him to be unassuming in
interviews and not all that impressed with himself. He did seem more than a
tad miffed at this year's Academy Awards show though, when he walked out to
present. I read later that he had specifically asked that the Forrest Gump
music (a role he is apparently trying to distance himself from) not be
played to introduce him. When it was, he showed a bit of temper. Quite
unlike him; I understand he is one of the friendliest and best-liked actors
working.

Anyway, Hanks was promoting "The Da Vinci Code", and Letterman in typical
Dave smarm asked him if the film was indeed the "most anticipated movie in
the history of movies." Hanks took a moment and said "No, that was
"Moonraker" in 1979." (There was no follow-up as to any disappointed
expectations.)

Gotta love Tom Hanks.

"...Bond's eyes narrowed. He knew, at some point, he would have to slay this
particular dragon. He settled back in his chair, removing a Morlands' three
ring special from the gunmetal cigarette case. As he waited for the
delicious Balkan/Turkish blend to take effect on his lungs, he reflected
that just a bit of judicious editing makes this place infinitely more fun,
friendly, and intellectually stimulating..."

I've been a long time fan of the man's work. And yes, he really impresses
me as being one fo the good guys in Hollywood. If it weren't for the fact
that the hype surround TDC kind of repulses me, I'd be very interested in
seeing it for Hanks alone. I'll still see it, but I can't help feeling
that there had to be a better suspense thriller he could star in. Should
be a very interesting film if he and Ron Howard put in the work rather
than rode their reputations.
