This story made big news in Chicago recently mostly because it's such a
non-story, with Mayor Daley publicly decrying such trifle when there are
REAL problems facing the city. (And the country...and the world...) I
didn't know James Bond was behind this insidious act until I ran across this
article at the always excellent MI6 site.
I've tried foie gras. It's OK. It's no big deal. I could live with or
without it quite comfortably. Ian Fleming and James Bond were gourmands of
the specialty however. One wonders what they would have said about so much
ado about nothing.
Don't get me wrong, I don't condone animal cruelty for the sake of animal
cruelty. But these birds are bred for their livers. Is their treatment
really any worse than gutting a tuna or clubbing a steer or electrocuting a
chicken?
Sorry Sir Rog, you may have won this battle, but it's so minor relative to
the *real* problems in the world. I admire your work with UNICEF, surely
the time spent with that organization serves a higher purpose. And must be
more satisfying. PETA is way low on the priority list.
No foie gras in Chicago. No cell phones while driving. No smoking in
restaurants. No handguns.
What's next, pot?
;)
Tom Zielinski
"...Bond's eyes narrowed. He knew, at some point, he would have to slay this
particular dragon. He settled back in his chair, removing a Morlands' three
ring special from the gunmetal cigarette case. As he waited for the
delicious Balkan/Turkish blend to take effect on his lungs, he reflected
that a little known fact is that the Green Mill served some of the best foie
gras in Chicago..."

Sir Roger Moore wins foie gras battle in Chicago
A new expose on the crude methods used to force feed ducks and geese for
pate delicacy foie gras, narrated by former James Bond star Sir Roger Moore,
has prompted Chicago, Illinois, officials to ban the product.
Activists People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a
screening of the harrowing video, featuring birds being force-fed with pipes
to fatten their livers, for Chicago's city councillors, who have since opted
to ban the sale of the delicacy.
It's the second major PETA victory in the fight to make the selling of foie
gras illegal in the US - Governor Anrold Schwarzenegger banned all sales of
the pate in California last year (05).
PETA bosses now have their sites set on New York, where the only two farms
left that produce the liver pate are located.
PETA chief Dan Mathews says, "Investigations into foie gras farms in the US
and Europe have revealed sick, dead, and dying animals, some with holes in
their necks from pipe injuries and ducks with bloody beaks and their wings
twisted together jammed into wire cages."
