I'm rather fond of Lisa episodes in general, and this one was pretty
good as they go. (Oh, and I'm also a grad student in math after being a
math major as an undergrad, and there are plenty of female faculty and
students in our department.) Lisa's own storyline was enjoyable and made
sense, though I must wonder why her only academic focus was on math. It
was a little annoying that generalizations of boys and girls persisted
throughout, but maybe that was the point; on the other hand, given that,
I am not inclined to make my usual request for more exploration of the
subject at hand. I wouldn't say it could even be called a B story, but I
rather enjoyed the timing of Homer's struggles with Marge and SLH here.
The only real groaner moment I remember was when "Bart Jr." made his
subtitled joke; what is that, post-postmodern? It wasn't funny.
(However, the I&S musical was pretty fun.) So, this could have been
better, but I enjoyed the basic idea.
DYN:
....Lisa didn't bother coming up with a name beforehand?
....Jake Boyman sounds rather like Milhouse?
....it's implied that Homer is in fact not smarter than a dog? (Compare
statements from the producers about Homer's intelligence vs. various
canines over the years.)
Previous episode references
7F09: Itchy & Scratchy + Marge + squirrel = comedy
GABF12: In the future, *only* girls learn math and science
1F12: Cathy Guisewite mentioned by name
AABF18: Burning bookmobile (cf. book-burning mobile)
Goofs
Lisa's room is in the wrong spot at the end of act 2.
Extra note
I saw that commercial for "Hoot" between acts 2 and 3; we all know from
the Futurama canon that owls are destined to become big pests, so why
are those silly kids trying to save them?
