"Despite hailing his cameo on the cult cartoon series the pinnacle of his
comedic career, Gervais has failed to return Groening's favor and invite him
to star in Extras."

I didn't know who Gervais was until he appeared on the Simpsons. I
have already forgotten his first name. And I didn't know about this
"Extras" thing until just now. Is it a TV show? I guess I don't get
the "Extras" reference.

I know what you're saying. Gervais is most famous (well, to me) for
originating and starring in "The Office" in the U.K. We have the same show
here in the states, but it's called "The Office."
I appreciate that kind of humor, but it takes a subtle hand. I don't enjoy
"The Office" all that much. Apparently, Brits think that Gervais is a comic
god of some kind.

So it's a show about people at this place called "The Office", but you
can't remember the name of the show?
So you don't enjoy "The Office". But what about that other show, "The
Office"?

More so than the French and Jerry Lewis?

Sadly, the quality of British comedy writing has really gone downhill since
the 1970s. The Office (UK version) is probably top of the pile these days,
but since the rest consists of garbage like 'Little Britain', that's not
saying much. The Simpsons make more sense than any of them, and that's
coming from an Australian!

Extras is a new show that Gervais has written

well, not brits the people, more so the BBC after 20 years of utter shite
and repeats, Gervais brought something out
that isnt a complete pile of toss, the BBC pounced on it and touted it as
the some sort of comedic masterpiece
cue media hype etc etc
to have more of a background you have to look at the BBC who have an
obligatory license fee - regardless of any subscription to cable/satelite.
So basically the first thing that comes along which isnt a repeat* (when it
took off it was in fact on the repeat schedule!) and can draw some sort of
audience (which shouldnt be hard seeing as 98% of uk tv is shit or repeats
of the 'classics' - the fact that these 'classics' came from the 80's and
nothing new/entertaining has been written since. So BBC trying to validate
their license fee will try and big it up as much as possible.
Unfortunately the same has happened with Little Britain and a few other
shows, they are not that great but as its new and people seem interested in
it so they'll do it to death trying to prove the point that we should be
paying them their license fee.
* A repeat over here is usually something that was written decade(s) ago
but is still in primetime because there is _nothing_ else available.
Which is basically I why I dont watch tv anything I want to see, I download

No way, "Do Shut Up!" is based on "Ye Shut Up!". Classic
"Shut Your Gob!" is crap, don't bother.

We prefer not to remember Benny Hill. It's embarrassing...

I'm sure the Catholic Church took notes...

Still the best program on tv at the moment is "Police Cops"

The Article claiming that Gervais 'snubbed' Groening is a bit
misleading, in a press shit-stirring type of way. He just didn't ask
him. The interviewer probably asked Matt was he going to appear in
Extras, to which matt responded, "he didn't ask me." Matt and gervais
probably never discussed the notion of having matt in the series.
