Earth people = Terrans: it's canon [message #20398] So, 24 April 2005 02:34

I have always loved the term "Terran" for referring to Earth people, but
it was never used in TOS. In TOS we are all from Earth, we are Earth
men and women. The Klingons call us "Earthers".

Well, hoorah, hoorah, we are caled Terrans in ST5, more than once. I
can't tell you how happy this makes me.

Thank you for your kind attention to this post.

Not true.
The fact that a crewmember on the Enterprise is human doesn't mean he
was born on Earth.

It was established that by Star Trek's era, humans are living on Mars,
and in Earth colonies even much further out in space. So the fact that
some crewmember is human doesn't mean he must have been born on Earth.

Would someone who was born and grew to adulthood in the Martian Colonies
think of himself as an Earth person? I doubt it. Not for long anyway.
Circa 1776, our Founding Fathers stopped thinking of themselves as
Englishmen too, and began thinking of themselves as a new
nationality--Americans.

The allusion to the "Fundamental Declaration of the Martian Colonies"
suggests that this same change in thinking was starting to take place on
Mars.

But minor bit of trivia - the term "Terran" or "Terran Empire"
is never once used in the original TOS episode. In fact, it
wasn't until Best of Both Worlds that they called our system
the Terran system, and the term "Terran Empire" was never used
until In A Mirror, Darkly!

What did you mean by "In TOS we are all from Earth, we are Earth men and
women"???

In TOS, humans are *not* "all from Earth." Lots of humans are living on
other planets, presumably having children there.

Which reminds me of the long running German Science Fiction pulp magazine
Perry Rhodan in which humans are also referred to as Terrans.
For the first 1,500 issues or so they had an empire called the Solar Empire.
And after that they had a 'League of Free Terrans'.
http://www.perry-rhodan-usa.com/
http://www.perry-rhodan.us/faq/faq.html

The name Terra or Terran was also used in the original Battlestar Galactica
and in Buck Rogers. And several other stories as well afaik.

_I never said all humans in TOS are from Earth_, I said WE are from Earth.

~WE~ ARE all from Earth you know. I don't think there are actually any
non-Earthings reading this, do you?

I like it, even though it seems ironic that our planet is called Earth

Pucky?
Maybe you mean the mouse beaver or ilt named Gucky? Or maybe Pucky was his
name in the English language version. Mutant with the powers of
telekinesis, telepathy and teleportation.
I read over 500 of those. I started with 490 just when the Gruelfin (sp?)
cycle was coming to closure and really got into it with the Swarm cycle (500
to 569).

They were hard to find in England. I came across two or
three in an old box of books we got in a jumble sale,
and I found a few more in a library once. My all time
favourite was the one where they went to a hospital
planet, they had this massive army of four armed
soldier robots with them. As a kid, that was an
amazing thing to imagine.

I read about 3 Perry Rodan books when I was a teen and one Captain Future
in those days. I don't think they were very popular here in the states.
I enjoyed them and they were a good fun read.

Hospital planet.... They mentioned several of those I think.... (It's been a
while).
Could it possibly be the Posbi planet, aka World of a hundred suns (or
something like that?).

Yes. I read them somewhere between the ages of 14 and .... somewhere in my
mid-twenties.
I do think they never broke through in the US.
Captain Future I first knew from the cartoon series.

Of course. Terra means Earth ('Aarde' in Dutch). The Greeks called her Gaia.
But keeping in pace with names given in our (western) world to the planets
Terra (Roman) would be more appropriate.
And even then there can be slight differences.
Over here we use some different varriations in spelling (and in all cases in
pronunciation) for planet names: Mercurius (Mercury), Saturnus (Saturn),
Neptunes (Neptune).

<slams forehead>

The Aras of course!
Yeah, some sort of galactic doctors. But not very ethical ones if I recall.
There were an off-shoot of the Akonides or Arkonides (I think those would be
their names in English).
The Akonides were an off-shoot of the Lemurians or First Humanity that had
an empire on Earth 50,000 years ago that was destroyed by The Beasts
(artificial biological war machines from another galaxy).
Earth's civilization was destroyed and those that didn't leave Earth became
our ancestors and those that fled wound up in several parts of the Galaxy,
including Akon. The bulk of course escaped to the Andromeda galaxy and
became the dominant species there.

references in it?

Wow, you know *way* more about all this than I do!

Yeah, I don't remember what the Aras were up to that
upset everybody, but it was something about medical
experiments or some such. Really the only two things
I remember from the book was the armies of war robots
and the main bad guy falling down a massive lift
shaft at the end, with Pucky flatly refusing to save
him even though Rhodan ordered him to.

I loved the one set on the giant high gee planet,
Gomon I think it was called? With an alien that was
made of little flat pancake critters that could join
together and network their brains to become one
giant super-mind. It was unusual to have people on
non-Earthlike worlds even in books , so that was
cool.

And I managed to find book #1 in the library, so I
saw how it all started off.

Yes it did come out first. I always thought they only
referred to Humans though, not Terrans? I'm not sure.

Earth people are called Terrans in STV. I don't know about BOBW.

In BOBW Worf reports the cube on course for sector 001,
"The Terran system".

The earliest use of the term in Trek that I can recall was in TAS
("Terratin Incident"). The Terratins turn out to be the descendants
of a lost early Earth colony that had originally been called "Terra Ten."
Canonicity: beats the hell outa me.

I always liked "Earthling" myself. It always calls to mind
insectoid aliens with ray guns. "Prepare to DIE, puny
Earthling!!!!"
