| Zappa's Drummers dictated his sound. [message #254153] |

One thing I always complain about is that Zappa used the same drummer
& Bass Player From 81 - 88. In alot of ways, the 88 band was the 82
band with a horn section. I feel the overall flavor of his sound was
very dictated by his drummer's style of playing.
What made Hot Rats Jump out at me was the different drum sound that I
was used to hearing. With Dunbar, Zappa's overall sound grew balls
overnight. From Chester up To Chad, Frank's sound would drasticly
change when the Drummer was replaced. I felt that Zappa's whole 80's
Rock Output was too slick sounding with a sort of common Bass/Drum
sound, whereas thru the 60s & 70s, it changed drastically and often.
Just my opinion, thats all

True. OTOH, Zappa dictated quite a bit about how the drummers and bass
players played. Chad's playing style on Allan Holdsworth records is
rather different from how he played with Zappa.
As far as 88 vs. 82, IMO, losing Ray White, Tommy Mars and Steve Vai
and gaining Ike Willis, horns and samples made a rather big difference.

But Mike Keneally had no effect?

I like the playing style of Chad but not is sounding electronic drum
pab and his snare sound plastic. Not more the bass drum of Chester on
You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 2.
So nothing is perfect and I still listen those drumers.

The things I mentioned were the top three differences, IMO. Keneally
would be #4. :)

The top four differences were Ike Willis, horns, samples, Mike Keneally,
and a ruthless efficiency.

Or the almost fanatical devotion to the Pope?

You guys have to remember Zappa was one of the few guys that actually
wrote music for drummers.
Zappa's drummers were a who's who's of the drum world.
I have no doubt that Bozzio could have played in the style of chester
thomson or visa versa.
i think just about anyone who played for Zappa (drummers or otherwise)
were capable of playing anything from classical to heavy metal.
