£50? Shouldn't that be 18 galleons, 8 sickles and 21 knuts?

Just a question about proper pronounciation......
is "knuts" supposed to be pronounced as "nuts" or "newts"?

I believe, in the absence of any definitive statement from Rowling, that
it's "nuts". I've tried coming up with some way for it to be linked to the
name Knut, which would be close to "newt", but failed.

He also says "a nih MAH jus" where I always read it as "a nih MAE gus";
it is also pronounced *my* way in the movie, although there is no
telling how much input JKR has on how things should be pronounced.

Well, the king of England 1016-1035 was Canute, sometimes spelt Cnut or
Knut, but usually pronounced ker-newt.

Hope this helps,

Andy

Yes, Knut would be the Viking spelling and Canute the Anglicized form. But
I can't figure how to connect him to bronze wizard coins.

Here's a guess:

Canute or Knut, he has gotten a bad rap over the years because people
misread the legend about him: some courtiers were doing exaggerated
flattery, saying he could hold back the tide, etc, and he decided he
was sick of it and had his throne carried to the edge of the water, sat
on it and ordered the tide not to come in. Of course it came in and
the courtiers had to admit they had been exaggerating. However, the
popular misreading was that he was both foolish and weak.

The connection I'm imagining is that the knut is the smallest (weakest,
least valuable) of the wizard coins. Any attempt to make the tide not
come in would require powerful magic; since Knut supposedly tried it,
that attempt would look like a weak wizard failing to make a spell work.
