I didn't give a formal introduction when I joined this group, and I
think you know enough about me now that it is pointless to do so at
this point in time. However, recent discussions have brought something
to light that I think needs clarifying, and I believe many of you will
miss the point because it is lost in a dying thread/you are Blon and
refuse to read anything that points out your mistakes.

If you insult my intelligence, or make a stupid remark when I'm having
a scientific/intellectual discussion with others, I WILL get nasty with
you. The blame is solely on you, for insulting me, or for posting even
though you don't know anything about what is being discussed. I take no
responsibility for the fact that you gave me the need to write nasty
words about you. What comes around goes around.

So, don't call me "idiot, imbecile, oaf," etc., and don't be one when
the discussion is scientific in nature, and we'll all get along fine.
Ok, Blon? Great. Thanks so much.

I'm really quite nice and funny, and if you don't call me an idiot when
you don't like my intensity, you'll see that.

No, you're not really nice and funny, Aaron, neither are you mature.
Otherwise, as I am now going to do to you, you would simply have used the
killfile on Blon.

PLONK!

LOL!

Killfiling isn't mature. Killfiling is what little CHILDREN do because
they can't stand what someone else has to say.

And I just explained why my recent behavior hasn't been nice, or funny.

Since you are currently in the minority (don't flatter yourself that
this is the only ng I post to), claiming that I'm not nice and funny,
I'll ignore that.

So, it seems there was nothing of value in your post. Predictable,
since you rarely contribute to ANYTHING on this newsgroup.

Well, at least now I know what constitutes "asshole bait." If I ever
want to bring out the assholes of the group again, I'll know how to do
it.

That's only one reason for killfiling. Killfiling is the proper way to
increase the signal/noise ratio of your newsreading experience. There's
people who rarely writes something that merits to be read, and there's
other people that can't afford the time to read every single post.

Consider, in light of that, the fact that "The REAL Naminanu" has gone
to the trouble to read a post CLEARLY labeled (OT)--off topic--to
announce that he/she is killfiling me.

Tell me that is mature. Please, humor me.

So is it? I wasn't following the thread, just casually stopped at your post.

I usually don't pay much attention to threads where pointless discussion
happens, so I don't have a feel for who's really mature and not, and
who's having a bad day. Either way I'm not really interested.

but you may disagree. Or were you asking something else?

Pardon me for mistaking the fact that you're posting in this thread as
an indication that you're interested, and thus attempting to continue
the conversation. My mistake. ;P

So, what pulled you in? The word "killfiling?"

Mature does not equate to being sanctimonious. Maturity does not stem from
depth of knowledge of a subject. Maturity does not show itself in accusing
others of the very failing that one can't see in themselves.

When you are mature, and I'm sure it will happen one day, you'll appreciate
why people sometimes dislike you, and why people sometimes opt for the use
of a killfile rather than suffering diatribes from individuals.

I did read your post that says that killfiling is juvenile, and
expressed another reason for killfiling. That's all. What has followed
is the subproduct of a day with few posts and no work. Pardon me for
being so talky :P

*sniiiiiiiiiip*

Maturity certainly includes making a statement and following through
with it. You said that you killfiled me. Yet, you continue to reply to
my posts and topics.

Grow some maturity, if possible. I'd give you a dollar to go buy some
maturity, but I'm stingy.

Follow through with your promises, and perhaps you will gain some
credibility in the "maturity" category.

But, probably not, if history is any judge.

Oh, and by the way, in my LENGTHY usenet experience, the vast majority
of those who use killfiles use them as a way to eliminate "noise" that
is anything but EXACTLY the signal they want to receive. In other
words, they're "close-minded fucks," to quote Eminem.

So, improving "signal to noise ratio" yes, but "signal" is typically
defined as "information that agrees with my preset notion of reality."

That doesn't make any sense. Again, please clarify. If you don't have
time to read every post, why read an (OT) post and then tell the poster
you are killfiling them because you don't like their posts? Immaturity.
That's why.

Well, it may be typical in your experience. It also depends in the
group. I haven't ever killfiled anyone, usually ignoring threads is
enough for me.

My usenet experience is also lengthy and my experience very much
differs. Indeed, I very rarely see anyone plonking somebody. I can't
remember the last time. Maybe it's because this is the only
non-technical and high traffic group that I read at present. (And if it
doesn't seem so high traffic to you, you can imagine how low are the
others).

I was not accusing you or anybody, just pointing that people like that
exist. I wouldn't bother to answer otherwise.

Are you mixing people or what? I haven't said I'm going to killfile
anybody. I didn't read the previous posts except the one I answered, and
the start of the first one in the thread which didn't finish because, as
I said, I wasn't interested in the argument. Even if I have the time, I
skip posts that find uninteresting or boring. My umbral is sometimes
higher, sometimes lower.

So is it? = Aha = I see = Vale = ¿Sí? = Ok / without any connotations,
without mockery, without anything. My english is poor. Don't read
anything more into it.

When this has become a point? I'm just interested in claryfing my
position every time you attribute to me motivations I don't have. I'm
completely uninterested on who "wins" the argument you're involved with
these other people. I can't even say who is in the other side. And of
course I'm not trying to win any argument with you. See, I don't get too
personal at usenet. I remember the names of a handful of people here,
recognize the mails of another few in an instinctive way. If they
changed nicks, I wouldn't probably recognize they're the same person. I
rarely retain any personal data of a poster. I'm simply not that kind of
person.

Add to this that I've learned english in "teh internets" and the result
is that most of the time I'm like dazed when reading/posting. See, I
don't even know what dazed means, but it rings as one apt word to put
there :)

Usually OT simply means off-topic, a phrase which here means "not about
Harry Potter." Many off-topic posts are quite interesting.

Yours wasn't.

It should have been e-mailed and came across as a junior high turf war.

BTW, coughbloncough looked like gibberish to mean, so I didn't even know it

You know, oddly enough I'm tired of this too... but as it's pretty
symptomatic of the signal-to-noise ratio of the entire group I shan't
bother with any killfiling; I shall simply unsubscribe again.

See you all when the next book comes out... (and *don't* bother replying

It could be. I am on several different newsgroups for various science
fiction authors. One group even makes a habit of plonking on the event
of multiple "violations" of usenet etiquette such as top posting, or
snipping attributions.

I was using the universal "you." I was asking, again, how it is mature
in the case of that person with the ridiculous username. They went to a
great deal of effort to read my post, get upset about it, and killfile
me (not that it bothers me). In the process, they decided to call ME

So, in other words, my post was OT. Thanks for verifying that.

To some.

Did you get the impression it was meant to be interesting? It was meant
to be informative, but not necessarily interesting. A very confusing
quasi-character assassination was taking place in the middle of another
long thread. I wanted to "step out" of that thread and finish off the
discussion.

Why are you making such an effort to be insulting?

> It should have been e-mailed and came across as a junior high turf war.

I do not wish to provide Blon with a functional email address that I
read regularly. That MSN account I used for my Google account is pretty
much a junk email address, where almost everything is sent to the junk
folder except for recognized senders.

Plus, I don't want to email Blon. So, skip my OT posts unless the
subject interests you.

newsgroup...

And, I didn't complain about your reply, did I? No. So don't worry
about it. Your reply was perfectly justified, mature, and respectable.

Since you cannot possibly know how and why the vast majority of those
who use killfiles do so, I can only assume that you have never been
active in a newsgroup that doesn't have enough of the sort of noise
one would sensibly want to filter to understand the signal-to-noise
justification.

To which I must say, You Lucky Bastard.

Not true. Perhaps I'm on such a newsgroup, but I am far more tolerant
than you are. Perhaps I am trollproof. I am on several newsgroups, and
I certainly hope that some of them are more trollish than most.
Otherwise, usenet is in more serious trouble than I had imagined. =)

This, at least, is certainly true.

Oh for god's sake, it is not. We come to usenet for entertainment,
primarily, and if someone is interfering with that we have every right to
filter that person's posts out. Period. These aren't the halls of
congress, or even city hall, for that matter.

Matt, I believe this subject to be far more complicated than was
represented by this several-days-old post you replied to. There have
been further discussions on this thread, and I have never (yes, never)
found someone so unentertaining, useless, AND un-ignorable that I felt
the need to killfile them.

Blon may have pissed me off a bit, and I may still blame her (perhaps
somewhat unreasonably) for the insults I flung at her and Ginevra, but
I wouldn't even consider killfiling her.

Right. Might as well repsond to spam, and never screen a phone call.

This is our lives, and we can ignore people who we don't care to hear
from. Or is somebody the Jehova Witnesses best friend?

These are terrible examples.

Screening a phone call is equivalent to what *I* do to trolls.
Killfiling would equate more to blocking the number of every single
sales call you receive at your home.

Responding to spam? Who's asking you to do that? But, you have a junk
mail folder, and you have to occasionally go through it to make sure
you're not throwing something worthwhile out with the trash, right?
That, again, is what you do when you do NOT use a killfile.

Using a killfile is like telling your computer to delete all spam
immediately. Well, I've had mail from friends show up in my Junk folder
from time to time, so I think this is a bad idea.

Screening a phonecall and receiving but ignoring spam are precisely
what you are NOT doing when you create a killfile

Exactly what I do do (mail and telephone preference services) I don't
care if they are trying to sell me car insurance or a time share in the
Maldives I do not want them calling me. If I ever want to get in touch
with a company I WILL NOT do it through their telesales
division/department.

Only if you know that sometimes in amongst all their juvenile crap there
is the occasional "jewel".

Write "tighter" rules then.

Have very few people actually killfiled (2 I think)
Kadiatcha man in 24hoursupport.helpdesk
and Mike Corley (MI5 victim) in uk.rec.sheds
Kman tends to call anyone who doesn't know everything a fuckwit, (his
entire attitude sucks). Whilst MC is a paranoid schisophrenic (self
admitted) who's posts consist of ten-fifteen year old posts of MI5
trying to control him through his television set
Think it is a waste of time and energy though to post that you(TINY)
have killfiled someone, better to just do it .

I think Microsoft is going to have PLONK preinstalled for the Kadiatcha man
on the next OS.

and it happens. One guy Killfiled me because he didn't like my joking
comment about the number of vidcaps he made (I think he capped every
frame.) Well, a week later, he found himself lost of important info
people were talking about because he never got my post. he was none
too happy being out of that loop.

And the moral is, have a sense of humor. Don't be so sensitive.

Yes, KFing helps, but occasionally you miss something good, or set the
parameters wrong and block someone else's posts you do want.

I recommend "The Strain" by the Bonzo Dog Band. Scatalogical rock and
roll!

BTW, I believe it's "Jehovah's Witnesses".

Specially when written text lacks so many info present in real-life
interaction.

Apart from the rule 'wait an hour, calm and re-read your answer', I find
very useful to think 'what if the person I'm responding to weren't a
faceless entity far, far away, but a real person talking face to face to
me?'

This is just how life is. When I was in college I had more time than I
could spend in all my hobbies. Nowadays, is a matter of constant
trade-offs... :(
