If you mean the rotten stuff he did for American TV later in his life, then
I agree. I bought a DVD of "Benny Hill's World: New York" recently and I
was amazed at the low quality of the material. Comparing his UK work to his
US work is like comparing Ronnie Barker to Jim Carey. (And I hope the
spirit of Mr. Barker will forgive me for even mentioning him in the same
sentence as that unfunny clod.)

I have fully enjoyed two Jim Carrey movies.
One was The Truman Show, the other Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless
Mind, and both I rate very highly.
Basically, I'm of the opinion he's a better actor than comic, although
his comic timing - though not his delivery - helps with the former.

I find Jim Carrey utterly creepy, and I'm not sure why. But I always find
myself repressing shudders when I watch him.

AOL. He was really good as one of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players -
perhaps because he was unknown then and therefore had to listen to the
director. Now he's a Star, and every time I try to watch a performance of
his I find myself cringing and creeped out.

I think he's rather good. However he gives the impression that he thinks
he's a lot better than he actually is. That may be an entirely misleading
impression, but it's why I don't consider his name on a cast list to be a
reason to watch something.

I consider him someone to be whacked with a very large clown hammer. Now
watch Sam Raimi give him a part in TWFM. :(

I consider it a good reason to avoid something.
I think he's a talentad actor, but it's possible to be good at something
that I really don't want to watch. So, he may be a good actor, but I can't
stand him.

I think he does surprisingly well at mostly-serious roles - shockingly so,
on occasion.
However, he made his name in sketch comedy, so the shortest distance to
film acting was slapstick movies, which, OK, yes, he can do, but they're
not generally known for quality scripts, direction or performances.
The problem is that he rarely gets offered a _Truman Show_ or _Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind_, partially because good scripts are rare in
Hollywood anyway, but also because there are names associated with the
idea of good dramatic scripts and his isn't one of them.
Then there's half-directed drek like _Fun with Dick and Jane_, which
presumably pays the bills but doesn't help shift his name towards meatier
roles. And there's always the danger that he could be perceived as not
wanting the comedy roles that put food on his table, and end up as a
C-lister instead of just a B-lister, so he can't push too far too soon.
I'll freely admit I don't tend to rush out and watch any comedy he's cast
in these days, although I won't instantly condemn anything he's in either.
It seems his career's a bit in flux - it could take off again or it could
collapse. Who knows?

All that's true. I thought _The Truman Show_ was watchable, once through. I
won't watch it again, though, while I watched _Resident Evil_ four times in
one day last week. Sure, it was more playing in the background than actuall
watching, but still. And I freely admit that FaCVoB, the Carrey movie is a
better movie.
Carrey just rubs my fur the wrong way.
I love Dana Carvey's sketch comedy, think his movies are stupid. But he
doesn't make me want to drop him in a river tied in a sack, while Carrey
does.
