Interesting. Is it like a forum, or something different. I'd join, but at
the present moment, my computer won't run javascript or just about anything
else with 'java' in it. If it doesn't, then you can pretty much count me in.
If it does, wait a few weeks till I get new technology, then I'll jump in.

ShadowDark) but I'm not sure if I'll continue playing, as the server seems
to keep on having hiccups and booting me off.....

It's a standalone program, running Quicktime for video and such, all
incorporated. You need a broadband connection, though, and a decent
processor and video card, as it's graphics intensive.

I don't really have time for this either. Plus:

tells it all.

And I don't look forward to having my personal info stored on yet
another company's database.

And one other question: Is getting a dragon/etc. avatar free, cost
in-game money, or cost real money?

I went to Council of Wyrms (at least the island that Draco18s pointed me
to, but I didn't see any avatars for sale there. But then, I only spent
a little time there.

However, from what I've seen, I'd need to play it for several years
before I could afford an avatar, and I'm not that interested to keep on
for that long with a gross misrepresentation like a human avatar.....
Maybe I'm being too picky..... <Shrugs>

I don't have all that much time, and what I do have seems to be all
taken up with waiting for stuff to load, so I never get anything done,
anyway.

It costs in-game money, which you can purchase with real money, but I don't
want to throw my money away like that.

Which is why I wanted to be able to help you, as the way Daryth set up the
dragons isn't intuitive unless you know what a vendor is and know what you're
looking for (or are watching someone else!)
If you got to the cathedral, there's a bunch of eggs. Clicking on them rezzes
the dragon model (with default coloring) into existence. To buy that avatar,
you pay the egg the correct amount(3500 for an 'adult', ~2500 for a 'Wyoming'
and 1200 (?) for a 'hatchling' (the names are size based, and hatchlings are
tinies, meaning smaller than the smallest human)), and if any are in stock (a
rare thing to find a limit on a product in SL when things can be easily and
relentlessly duplicated) you'll get an egg which contains the avatar parts
(hatchlings are not subject to stock issues).
Last I checked there's a new dragon out...tomorrow? And every other dragon
gets ~10 eggs released on June 31 (Summer Solstice)--5 at noon, 5 at midnight.
If you want one, r-click the egg, select pay, enter the correct amount for the
size you want (adult/wyrmling) and then time your system clock to the SL clock
and watch it approach 12:00 (hovering your mouse over the pay button). When
it does, hit pay immediately. You'll be reacting to something you saw
approaching on a 1 second scale. Everyone else will be reacting to something
on a 1 minute scale.

>However, from what I've seen, I'd need to play it for several years
>before I could afford an avatar, and I'm not that interested to keep on

It is a gross representation. And if you manage to get over your connection
issues (it's most likely not the server, and if it was, there would be
complaints filed from everywhere and it'd be fixed very quickly), I can take
you shopping.

>> And no...I have no time for life sinks like SL. But Athelind does.

Well, basically, in-game money == real money. There's a direct
exchange rate, and you can at any time buy or sell in-game money. Free
accounts get $L50/week, premium accounts get $L500/week, and you can
buy more if you want. There are ways of making money in-world, as
well, mostly by creating content and selling it.

Avatars, and stuff in the game in general, can be had one of 3 ways:
1. find one for free (usually low quality sample work made as free
promos)
2. buy one.
3. make one yourself. The tools you need are all in-game (the
object-builder and scripting language) or available for free (gimp for
textures, blender/avimator/several others for animations, tons of
software for creating sound files...)

By the way, the game has a native Linux client (lacking some features).
So that's cool :)

So, there you go. Hope it's helpful.

Oh, and there ARE some wonderful dragon avs around, both bipedal and
quad. I've got a bipedal av just because I dislike the animations on
most of the larger ones (their back legs don't move right!). Oh, and
quads are expensive... heh.

Sounds a lot like a graphical (3D and sound even!) MUSH, with the
ability to code and all.

Isn't it possible to just edit the animations? Or do you have to
create it from scratch if you wanted anything custom?

I'd sure love to sign up, but it seems they want too much information.
I'm not willing to let them pinpoint me on a map, least of all be able
to charge me. Unless anyone knows how I can give fictitious
information, and still activate the account.

That's what it is indeed. Although there isn't a [at] dig function.

Nope. Animations are created outside of Second Life. I don't even think that
if you have full permissions on an animation (copy, modify, transfer) that you
can save it out.
You can save textures though.

Register with a cell phone and drop a fictional address/name in there. Linden
Labs doesn't have the authority (police/fire) to track down your location
(assuming your phone has the GPS technology).

That's exactly what I thought the first time I logged in. It's more
feature-filled, though, because there's a lot that can be done with
physics/object interaction/stuff like that.

From scratch :(

Animation files are in the BVH format, and you can't save them to disk,
even with full permissions. There are open-source tools for creating
them, though. Avimator and Posemaker are made for SL, and Blender is a
3d-animation suite that can create BVH...

They do ask for a lot of information, but they have a good reason. The
grid went down twice this weekend because of griefer attacks. The
ability to ban those users (and potentially take legal recourse against
them) justifies wanting personal info. The credit card info is
primarily for purchasing the premium account/land tiers/extra in-game
money, though. If you have a credit card on file, all of that is
automated in game (with proper warning messages, of course).

But for a free account, yeah, you can use a phone account with falsified
info... just beware that you'd be violating their terms of service, so
if they found out about it they can (and will!) ban you. That would ban
your IP address as well as the false account, too.

Sorry for the needlessly long post...

I've heard from some friends that it's possible to charge money to a
cell phone. Can anyone debunk this? Or is it true?

At least this is a game that "reflex" doesn't matter in, it seems to be
more of a programmer/artist's game.

Hmm, no idea. Sounds plausible, though. Could just put a charge on
your next month's bill.

I wouldn't call it a game, because there are combat areas (and games)
*inside* the world. It can be anything you want it to be, which is one
of it's great strengths.

I don't think so. I clicked on the "buy L$" button with my cell phone account
once and it wanted me to enter a billing method.

Yep. If you want to make money racing cars, get a car and race. It can be
done (I watched a race once). You can go clubbing (there are contest events
at every club on a near regular basis). You can try your luck at casino games
(there are things such as poker too! I.E. all the money goes back to /a/
player instead of house edge).
There's nearly everything.

The problem is, it doesn't work right. I left it online last night and
something screwed up (L$1 for 5 minutes paid me L$3 over 8 hours) and
again today, it didn't screw up today, but I only got paid L$6 (or so)

Simple process. Be faster than anyone else on the 31st of June (either noo=
n,=20
or the following midnight). Best way to do that is to see based on the sys=
tem=20
clock EXACTLY when the minutes on the SL time tick and then pay the vendor=
=20
within one second of the designated time, everyone else will be having a=20
reaction off of something that's slow, you'll have a reaction off of an eve=
nt=20
60 times faster and thus more quickly judge when noon/midnight occurs.

The rest of that was how much you'd be setting up to pay the vendor based o=
n=20
the size of avatar you want.=20

Probably a hiccup in the connection (something very tiny can break it, it's=
=20
amazing). Next time you see it, right-click on something, edit, and the=20
general tab (click "more" if necessary) and see if it shows up saying who t=
he=20
owner is. If it's blank, you're not connected.
And yes, LL knows that SL is perfectly incapable of detecting network error=
