'Star Wars' goes back to basics
Updated 5/3/2006 6:43 PM ET
By Mike Snider, USA TODAY
Die-hard Star Wars fans soon can see the original theatrical versions of
the first three Star Wars films on DVD.
Even though George Lucas adamantly declared 2004's digitally restored
Star Wars Trilogy DVDs the definitive versions of his movies, fans have
held out hope for DVDs of the originals.
Their wishes will be granted Sept. 12 when Fox releases new two-disc
DVDs ($30 each) of Star Wars (since retitled as Episode IV: A New Hope),
The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi that include the films as
they first appeared in theaters, along with the new, restored versions
(now available in the four-disc $70 Star Wars Trilogy).
The individual DVDs will be taken off the market on Dec. 31, a strategy
that Disney uses on many of its classic releases.
Lucas re-released his original three Star Wars films in theaters in 1997
with inserted scenes and improved special effects. Those "special
editions" were further enhanced for the four-disc DVD set. With the
original versions coming to DVD, here's what you'll see again:
• In Star Wars, Han Solo shoots a bounty hunter named Greedo. Lucas
changed the scene later so it seemed that Greedo draws first, and
changed it again for the DVD so that they appear to shoot simultaneously.
• In Empire Strikes Back, the ice creature that captures Luke Skywalker
gets less screen time.
• In Jedi, Sebastian Shaw returns as Anakin in the movie's final scene.
Lucas substituted Hayden Christiansen, who plays Anakin in the more
recent films, for the 2004 DVD.
Back in 2004, Lucas told the New York Post, "The special edition is the
one I wanted out there."
This new set of DVDs does not constitute "George changing his mind,"
says Lucasfilm's Jim Ward. "What we've always said is George viewed the
revised versions of the films as the definitive versions."
Fan attachment to the originals is strong. The movies topped
entertainment website IGN.com's recent chart of Top 25 Most Wanted DVDs.
"People want the option of having the movies that they remember and
people are opposed to George Lucas' revisionist tendencies," says the
site's Chris Carle.
The original films' video quality will not match up to that of the
restored versions. "It is state of the art, as of 1993, and that's not
as good as state of the art 2006," Ward says.

The most annoying change for me between the Original ROTJ and the
revised one was the change of the music at the Ewok Party.
I have the original videos, and in the original ROTJ
(http://www.wookies-etc.com/images/content/endor-forest.jpg) the Ewok
celebration was to a really funky 'disco/star wars' music.
In the revised version, this was replaced by Pan Pipes and Bongos,
which to my mind is too ephermeral (wishy-washy?) to capture the
fantastic 'Yes!' that the victory over the Death Star II really was.
Does anyone else remember the original ROTJ Ewok party music?

Agreed, that was really the only thing that bothered me about the revised
trillogy. The Greedo shoots first didn't bother me too much.

'Han shoots first' seemed to be the most controversial one. I think the
large majority of SW fans would choose the musical number in Jabba's
Palace as their most hated change; but what's there to discuss about it?
Discussion usually happens when there's disagreement. I have yet to find
someone that actually likes the musical number. :-)

Oh, for fuck's sake! I've already *got* them, and so has most everyone
else - can't we have the option to buy just the original versions so we
don't have to flood the charity shops with spare copies of the SEs?

The only change that makes no real sense at all is sticking Hayden's
head on the Jedi Ghost of Anakin at the end. It's makes the whole
"Anakin is redeemed" point of the story a complete waste of time. X-(

Fuck if I'm buying these motherfuckers again.
I'll wait until the HD-DVD or Blueray versions come out so Lucas can fuck me

That one was a bit of an annoyance too, but to me, not as much of one as
the music change. I can see, in light of a 6 episode arch, using the face
of Anakin that people will know, we only get the brief glimps of Shaw's
portrayal, and that's the scared mostly dead face of a man consumed by
years of rage.

Interesting. The new celebration music was about the only thing I
liked. The Yub-Nub song was cheesy and silly. I like the more somber,
reflective music with more focus on the reunion of the rebels and less
on the Ewoks jumping around and acting like idiots. It evokes a sense
of celebration with thankfulness and a reflection over a sense of loss.
The Yub-Nub song reflects only the absurdity of the Ewoks.

If they go all the way back to the beginning there is some stuff most
people has never seen unless the they saw it first run or on the LD.
Leia shoots at the storm troopers before they stun her.
Some lines in the hanger deck office where Luke has to try a couple of
arguments to talk Han into going after Leia. She's beautiful. So's
Life kid.

The Sad part is, they did not even put it in Dolby Digital! On top of that,
we have to buy the ones we already bought once again. I hope that the boxes
have the original movie posters as the covers. I like nice art instead of
generic BS.

Great, jackasses won't bother with a new transfer, just a shit one. I can
see the black crush and pixelization already...
Count me out until I hear reviews...
And since we're on the topic - other than Han shoots first, my other huge
complaint was the changes on Bespin that totally shot the wheels off the
score and the timing of the movie.

<snipped>
Why is that "sad"?
You can't have it both ways.
If you want the "Original" Trilogy, you have to take the "original
soundtrack" (which was in regular old Dolby Surround - 4.0DPL), you can't
get an unaltered version by altering the soundtrack to Dolby Digital (5.1)
(Although I guess it could be argued that it *will* be released in Dolby
Digital, since Dolby ProLogic technically *IS* a Dolby Digital format, aka
Dolby Digital 4.0)
What scares me is Lucasfilm saying the transfer won't be up to its usual
high standards, it better *at least* look as good as the Definitive
Collection laserdisc boxset THX discs did!
(At the VERY least, it will be in Anamorphic Widescreen, so I can load them
into my DVD changer along with the re-edited-edited-edited versions that
will be forced upon us all again in order to get the "Original Trilogy")

I thought that Empire had the best changes which expanded the scope of the
original film. I am talking special edition Empire. Jedi had the worst
additions.

As far as I know Fox is only supporting Blu Ray. And even so, Fox will have
to go to GL to see if he wants them released in that format.

Your opinion. I thought that it enhanced what already was. I guess you
are one of those complainers. Empire had the least flaws so he could not
mess that up. Jedi was done the worse and those changes were unnecessary.
