I just saw the commercial for the new "Star Wars Transformers" toys and
was surprised.
Does this mean that the Transformers brand is now going to be placed on
any transformable toy and not refer only to the robots from now on?

No, it means that there's a line of figures out now that transform into Star
Wars vehicles and a robotic counterpart to that ship's pilot. For example :
Slave-1 transforms into Boba Fett
Tie Fighter transforms into Darth Vader
X-Wing transforms into X-wing pilot Luke Skywalker
Sith Infiltrator transforms into Darth Maul
Milennium Falcon SPLITS & transforms into Han Solo & Chewbacca
General Grievous' rolling vehicle transforms into General Grievous
Jedi Fighter transforms into Obi Wan Kenobi
ARC-170 Starfighter transforms into Clone Trooper (upcoming figure)
Slave-1 transforms into Jango Fett (upcoming figure - repaint)
Imperial Shuttle transforms into Emperor Palpatine (upcoming figure)
The above list is not complete.

I think that will be case for future Hasbro products. If Hasbro made
.... I don't know ... transforming Zoids, they'd probably sell them as
"Zoids Transformers" even if none of them were characters from the
Transformers universe proper.
After having bought most of the SW TFs available, I find myself not too
enthused about them as (a) they aren't really Transformers (big "T"),
just transforming vehicles in the SW universe, and (b) they don't
really have the same look/feel as the normal Transformers, almost like
a different design team was used with a different type of plastic.
Despite my completist tendencies, I'll probably pass on the rest of
them. It's too bad that the line wasn't "Transformers: Star Wars"
instead with TF characters as SW vehicles.

As long as Hasbro is releasing the toys, that's quite possible.
Anyone else using the "Transformers" name without getting Hasbro's
permission first would still commit trademark infringement.

More like a "Transformers" addition to the Star Wars family, as the
characters are all Star Wars guys.

They're not really "new", they've been around for a little while now.
They look quite good in the "vehicle" mode, but the "robot" mode looks
hopeless (about as bad as the old "musclebound" figures) ... since when
does Darth Vader use a shield?!?!?

You think that's bad? They've got Star Wars characters on motorcycles.
It's the Choppers line. I've opted to pass on both of these. And from the
looks of the shelves at my local retailers, most others have also decided to
stay away.

Those "Choppers" are awful (you can even get a "Star Wars" kids'
ride-on bike as well), but if you think their are bad then you should
see some of the the non-toy lines they stick the "Star Wars" name on:
lawn sprinklers, wardrobe air freshners, etc. And those are just the
licensed products. :-\

No it doesn't. Hasbro only own a few ranges of toys. They don't own all
the other things.
LucasFilm on the other hand does provide the licenses to all the
products that leagally use the "Star Wars" brand.

True, Hasbro doesn't produce the guitar picks and lawn sprinklers. But they
do produce the Transformers and Choppers that we were talking about
originally.
There is a lot of crap out there, but here is one thing I would LOVE to
have:
http://www.3day.com/collections/luc/LucHome.aspx
I've got two rooms dedicated to SW (mostly action figures, but a few BK
toys, Pez, posters, etc.) and these blinds would really help finish them
off.

Those are fantastic. I'd love to get a set of those too but which one to
get? I'd just have to get them all and fill the entire house. I'm sure the
wife won't mind. ; )

Newlyweds! ;-P
I've currently got two rooms and joke about taking over my wife's sewing
room. You can just imagine the nasty looks at get. I'd love to eventually
have one room for each of the films. Then I could have appropriate blinds
for each room. Right now, the window coverings consist of sheets from
bedding sets from four of the six movies.

What you want is double-sided blinds - twist them one way and you see
Anakin (for example) and twist it the other you see Vader. :-)

It's not impossible. This isn't the first time this has happened - when
they did the Animorphs toys a few years ago, the toys had the
'Transformers' brand despite not being 'actual' Transformers.
Doesn't happen as often as it might have once, as transforming robot
toys aren't quite so ubiquitous as they once were.

I like to think of them as pre-sentient Quintesson models.
This works for the mass-produced lines, such as the T-65 (really, look
at the little plastic pilot. That could be almost any X-Wing pilot),
not so much for the unique ships (TIE Advanced prototype, Greivous).
Perhaps the Quintessons had lines specifically designed to look like
other companies products, or use the other companies products as
shells/layout for the shell (TeleTran-1, BW+ era scanners), with the
bonus of having the mech mode. You get a superior fighter that looks
like something it's not, without cluing your opponent in that you've
switched suppliers.
We've seen ET's in the SW universe, why couldn't Quintessons fit in
there somehow? It's a big universe.
I guess that would make the YT-1300 the only Autobot in the series thus
far.

No. I'm pretty sure I want six rooms filled with Star Wars stuff. ;-P
