Jedi Council [message #249314] Sa, 22 April 2006 08:27
Brett McConnie
In both AOTC and ROTS we got to see some of the Jedi Council in action.
nearly all of them gave poor accounts of themselves, especially the three
stooges in ROTS. Which member of the Jedi Council, from any of the prequels,
would you like to have seen involved in more battle scenes?

Kit Fisto.

The scenes in the Clone Wars cartoon were interesting, but reminded me a bit
too much of Aquaman. I'd like to see how a live-action underwater battle
scene with lightsabers would play out.

There was an underwater battle that was deleted from Episode I, but it
was only Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon fighting sea creatures.

Didn't know lightsabers worked underwater.

They do ... except when they get water inside them, as Obi-Wan found
out at one stage.

I didn't think they did... they'd vapourise any liquid in contact with
the blade constantly, releasing a large stream of bubbles ( like
sticking a red hot poker in a bucket of water ) making it fairly
impossible to see. I imagine the water around the user would also get
very hot pretty quick. Make for an easy way to boil a cup of coffee!

I seem to recall something from Splinter of the Mind's Eye about
lightsabers underwater, but don't have the book to check.

It's possible that Kit Fisto, being from a water planet, made his
lightsabre with special underwater abilities. Obi-Wan's lightsabre in
Episode I got "fried" when he was in the swamp (before meeting Jar
Jar).

I have got Splinter of the Mind's eye, but it's been YEARS and YEARS
since I've read so I have no idea whereabouts in that book there might
be something connected to this.

It did? I'll have to watch TPM again, I don't remember that.

I did a quick Google, apparently Luke uses his underwater at one point
in the book. I still think he'd parboil himself given how much energy
they pump out. :)

You won't remember it since it's a deleted scene (I'm not sure if it's
on the DVD). It's in the novelisation though.

Ah, that's why I don't remember it.

Here's a bit from the Fact Files ...

[Obi-Wan] discovered that his lightsaber was prone to
short out when immersed in water. This happened, for
example, when the young Jedi bailed out of a Trade
Federation landing craft into a pond on Naboo.

After he lost his lightsaber on Naboo, Obi-Wan made a
modified version that resisted moisture.

So it's possible to make a lightsaber that works in the rain (like on
Kamino) and Kit Fisto's obviously works underwater, as does Qui-Gon's
in the EU ...

As well as using his lightsaber to cut through ice on
at least one occasion, in the events leading up to
the invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation, the
Jedi Master [Qui-Gon] found his lightsaber invaluable
in evading a gairk while under water.

By the way, you can't use a lightsaber to boil a cup of coffee or boil
the user when underwater since a lightsaber blade produces no heat.
:-)

OK, I accept that the blade might not produce heat, otherwise Jedi would
need heat-proof suits to be able to use them, but it DEFINATELY heats
whatever is in contact with it.

So, yes, I could boil (more likely vaporise) a cup of coffee with it. If
a lightsaber blade didn't heat anything then explain what we saw when
Qui-gon was cutting through the door in the beginning of TPM. Also
explain why when a droid gets cut in half by one, the cut edges are red hot?

Therefore, if it's underwater, it would constantly be heating the
surrounding water as it touches the blade, which would turn it instantly
to steam.

Fair?

That's why it was carefully worded in the books, etc. It's also true of
things like electricity too - it doesn't itself have any heat, but as
soon as you put it into contact with something that has resistance you
get heat produced, which of course is how heaters, toasters, etc. work

That would depend on whether the pressure from the "vaporising" water
around the blade is higher or lower than the water outside it. If it's
a higher pressure then the water outside can't get to the blade (until
it's moved).
