With Sirius's death, Harry no longer had any regular correspondents. In
the previous few books, Hedwig showed up mostly when Harry was writing to
Sirius, or to the Weasleys during his stay at Privet Drive. Since Sirius
is dead and Harry's stay at Privet was unusually short, there were few
opportunities for Hedwig to contribute to the plot.

There are a number of the earlier conventions that were eliminated in
this novel. Notice that there is no train ride home where the trio
compare notes. There is no final confrontation with the Dursleys. The
novel doesn't open with Harry's problems at Privit Drive, and the
"Dursley's" chapter is amazingly weak.

Would it be safe to assume that Harry used Hedwig to place is order
for the new potions book ? AND Jo fails to note in the text ?

I think that would be a reasonable assumption. We've been shown
Filch trying to intercept orders for dungbombs that were sent by owl,
and older students routinely ordered things from the Weasley's Wizard
Wheezes. It makes sense that Harry would send the order by Hedwig,
and that Hedwig would deliver it as well.

Dave, was this cut and pasted directly from your thesis on how you know
HBP wasn't written by JKR?
