From the dragon's own... [message #247453] Sa, 15 April 2006 07:22

I've decided to create my own version of a Beastiary, complete with
pictures, for just about every creature known to wander the nether-regions
of the earth, and some that aren't. When it came to writing my entry for
dragons, well I couldn't think of a better place to come for suggestions
than Here. Particularly, I've noticed that when it comes to descriptions,
they tend to be very stereotypical and biasaed and figured you lot might
want a word in on what your entry would say. If you also have some nice
suggestions for pictures (mayhap even a description of yourself!) or
anything else you think should be included for this entry (including names
of other beasts) feel free to let me know.

You want /one/ description for dragons? Good luck!! There are as many
descriptions as there are dragons, and then some!!

Myself, well, I stand about 120' tall (an approximation, since I haven't
yet regained my trueform to have someone measure it correctly), I have a
180' wingspan (again, approximate), a 60' long tail (you get the idea),
I'm bipedal (like humans) and digitigrade (meaning I stand on the balls
of my feet and toes, not on my heels), I'm completely black, including
things like teeth, claws, tongue, etc, etc, etc, the only thing that
isn't black are my darkly glowing red eyes, which I can cover if I need
to, I can become invisible, I can see things that are invisible, I was
adopted by a god after my entire family being slaughtered by hunters,
how I survived is anyone's guess, and I'm a Master Arch Mage, meaning
there's little if anything I can't do with magic. Unfortunately, my
magic is still employed in keeping my trueform alive, and thus I have no
command over it currently, but I do keep on trying to gain some control,
or a connection to my trueform that I can use to find it. I believe
that if I can make such a connection, I'll be able to transfer my
essence from my current host to my trueform and be myself again, and I'm
always interested in assistance. I have managed to astrally project
twice, once by accident, the second time willingly, both times short and
pretty much useless in fict, since I couldn't even see anything or hear
anything, all I felt was myself falling forward, expecting to hit the
things around me, and not doing so, the second time I rose up about 10
feet or so, but both times the experience ended before I could gain any
real control over my astral senses, and since then I have been unable to
astrally project.

Anything else you would like to know about me, while we're on the
subject?

developed. One of the results was a drastic alteration in the parent
species' survival tactics. Evolving could take place within the
individual rather than over many generations. Reproductive rates
plummeted until it was extremely rare to clutch more than once in a
millennium, and once in the precession of the axis (~26millenniums)
was not unusual. The ability to permanently alter the life code, and
the will to do so, meant that quite rapidly (relatively speaking) many

with lowered rates of reproduction the sustainable population level
was in chaos, the selected way to resolve this issue was colonization.

darklings of the dark tide are in fact derived from us. If true it
would go quite a way toward explaining more than a few similarities,

So the form you're currently in is not your trueform? Wouldn't that limit
your magic ability to a degree? What I find is for my magic to be at it's
optimum strength, I have to be in my Trueform (but that's a bit hard with
all the humans around. They tend to get a little carried away and violent.)
As for the assistance, I'm always open, but I've found through experience
that, while different creatures all have a magical talent, some tend to have
different 'brands' of magic, if you will. What I'm concerned about is that I
could very much make the problem worse (if it has any effect at all) if I
tried to help, since my Trueform is not of the Dragon kind. The only
difference I can see is that, like other creatures, my magic is of the
'non-invasive' kind. I can adapt it pretty well to focus on the strenghts
and similarities of another creature's. If you are still interested, by all
means, let me know...

I have to admit that I haven't been able to do anything of the sort, nor
have I any immediate desire to. The idea of being seperated from my body,
either through force or will, disturbs me. I profer to simply change forms,
as opposed to changing mediums.

I've done extensine research both through 'the net' and through personal
experience. These Dragons Here are not the only ones I've spoken too, nor
are they the only type of creatures I converse with, so I get a pretty
broard spectrum of insight...

I have heard something similar to this, but not in this detail.

You have given me a great deal of interesting history, and oddly enough, I
can relate to much of it. For example, much of the history of my kind has
been lost either through the death of elders, or human interference. They
nearly wiped out my entire kind to the point where at one stage few more
than 10 existed at any given time. Luckily, their interests have turned to
more mundane things these ages. Much of our history was lost, along with
countless generations of magic learnings and folk tales that explain some of
the most important aspects of our kind, such as the reason the Moon plays
such a crucial role in our existance.

A description is all I can offer, I think.

My dragon form is similar to the representations I have seen of Celtic
dragons.
My size: standing of all fours, I stand about 7 feet from the floor
to the top of my head and about 5 feet to the top of my front haunch.
I am about 4 foot wide, depending on the amount of chocolate I have
recently consumed. My length is about 12 feet from nose to tail. My
outer covering is hide and has the feeling of a soft goat leather
glove. Coloring is a sandy, tan, brown mixture, not quite molted but
not of a consistent coloring. Imagine it was painted with a real small
paintbrush one dot at a time and all dots were of a different shade of
tan then dry brushed together. I don't have any spiky bits or horns
but I do have a hard dense bump on the tip of my snout and two just
above my eye ridge; not quite rhino horn but I can fell a tree should
I decide to. I have a semi-ridged spade at the termination of my tail
which expands a bit when in flight. My wings are not quite built for
long flights but I can ride thermals if they are good ones, I am more
of a short flight type. My hands are pterodactyl and have short blunt
talons. My back feet are also five digits, the talons are a bit longer
there. My preferred terrestrial mode of travel is on all fours but I
can stumble a bit on my rears. I do breath a bit of fire, though
nothing like they show in renderings and on T.V.. I filter out the
nitrogen in the air with a special lung and chemically attach oxygen
to it and store in an almost liquid gaseous state. A specialized
saliva gland in the roof of my mouth chemically ignites the vapor, or
I can expel it in the liquid/gas state and it comes out rather cold.
It's good for starting small fires; and I have become rather adept at
conjuring up flaming snot balls. I am omnivorous and my teeth are
built as such. I am a creature of the forest and am at peace sunning
on a rock in the clearing of my woods.

That is all I can think of for now; please ask if wish more :)

No, I've been stuck in a human host for some time now. Like almost 30
years now.

Yes, since my magic is all with my Trueform. I need to get it to
recognize me, so that I can employ it. Unfortunately, for that, I'd
need a physical connection, although an astral connection (a true astral
connection) might work.

I need to find my trueform and be reunited with it. That's the
assistance I need. Unfortunately, either it's hidden from me, or I
still don't know how to look for it.

As per the above, I feel it would assist me in my searching and perhaps
even regain my my trueform, so it's an avenue I need to explore.

That won't be easy.. the species 'dragon' is a very very very wide general
name. I can't think of a single thing that ALL dragons would have in common.
Not all dragons are even organic, let alone shaped the same. There are the
common body types (western, eastern, serpent, wyvern), but it gos way beyond
that as well. Not all dragons have legs/wings/tails/heck, even heads in some
cases, while others have more than one set of legs/wings/heads/etc. There is
just no way to cover all of 'dragons', some dragons even go against the name
'dragon' which means 'large lizard' because they aren't really a lizard,
and/or large. Some dragons are very tiny, other dragons are mammal and have
fur. There is no easy way to pick out what is a dragon and what isn't often.
Pretty much anything that carries any vague resembleance to a western,
eastern, serpent, or wyvern, is concidered a dragon, no matter what it's
made out of, it's size, how many libs it has, what skin-type it has, weither
it's cold/warm/hot blooded, etc. etc.

I myself resemble a stero-typical western dragon, red scales, quadraped, two
wings, one head, one tail, fire breath weapon. But I'm smaller than the
stero-typical dragons (only can grow up to a max of 10 feet, and that is
counting from my nose to tailtip which I have quite a long neck and tail for
a western, nearly looking like an eastern) Also, my life span isn't uber
huge like in the stories, I'd be lucky to see 100 years, just like a human
being that's in very good health. I also don't have a behaviour like
stero-typical red dragons, and I naturally have a lot more animalistic
behaviour than some 'sentient' dragon would be.

I know a lot of dragons different shapes, sizes, builds, etc., and I really
can't find any physical feature that we all would share.

One thing to note as well is that 'dragons' didn't come from just one
origion, they came from many. I've heard of some that were created localy on
earth, evolved from animals just like all other life here, others came from
different dimensions, others from astral, others created meerly from the
belief of man kind who became real from the power of the collective mind. To
how I see it, there is no 'one origion' I think dragons could have come from
multiple sources, if you think about it, all living creatures on earth carry
stong similairies, and a 'common dragon' shares many trates alike other
living creatures (snouts, beaks, wings, paws, tail, neck, horns, etc.) When
you think of it, it's not /too/ long of a streach to wounder if more than
one completely seporate species ended up evolveing into something that could
be called a dragon. Remember how close dinosaurs were, or every day lizards,
or birds, or even fish.

Maybe there is no physical feature we all share. But we all share one
thing, to varying degrees -- our belief and our trust, in ourselves, and in
others like us, be they dragon, furry, faerie, whatever.

> day lizards, or birds, or even fish.

Also remember that people never actually saw dinosaurs in their natural
habitat. Even paleontologists don't really know what they're building,
they're looking at what they see today to draw conclusions as to what
existed before. Everything they have is merely a theory, a theory that
can never be thoroughly proven or disproven until they actually go back
and see their fossils in life.

Remember, too, that it's entirely possible that they're reconstructing
said fossils wrong. If so, I'm sure it's not a consiracy, nor are they
doing it purposely, but since they don't really know what actually
existed "back then", they don't know how things fit together today.

It's entirely possible that dragons didn't evolve naturally from the
theory of primordeal ooze and that they came to this planet from
elsewhwere. It's also entirely possible that they did evolve naturally
from the theory of primordeal ooze, and simply chose to leave the
planet. There's a theory that an asteroid hitting the earth killed off
all the old species. And, yes, this is a theory, since nobody was there
to document its happening. They might have impact marks that show that
an asteroid did, in fact, hit the planet, but not that it was the cause
of extinction of the species of the planet. But I digress, the point I
was making is that perhaps dragons found out about this event and left
to save themselves.

And, no, I'm not picking on you, Dafydd, though it might seem as if I'm
attacking you or your point of view. Your posts are the only things on
my server right now, other than my own, and I'm not going to argue with

Exactly. And a good place to get an idea of just how many different

working on this for a couple of years now. Be warned though, the

Well that's good to know, as well I'm glad that you put both possiblies into
consideration, that's a good skill to have. It can be hard at times, but
people must consider things in more than one view, and that there are more
possiblities than what they believe in. I've debated with myself much about
things people have said and honestly ask myself if one, the other, or both
are plauseable and if it's even remotely plauseable, I consider it a
possiblity.

It's very well possible that dragons could have come from another planet,
from our own local ooze like you said, or even perhaps both, dragons could
well have multiple origions, who knows.

I try to look at at least one more point than my own. Yes, it's not easy,
but it helps see other points of view.

Yes, I can see extra terrestrial dragons breeding with terran dragons and
engineering a whole new species.....

I don't measure time in the same units mankind uses (due to several
confusing factors), but I can understand what an eternity that would be. The
majority of the time, I am in my Trueform. However, when I meet other
creatures, I take another form. Even if I switch forms in that state, I
still feel a pulling to return to my Trueform, and the simple idea of being
phisically seperated from it...

I think everyone else hit the proverbial nail on the head.
However, if you wish for my description, you may have it.
I am a metallic silver-scaled, western style quadrupedal dragon. Two horns
stick out behind my head, starting from above and behind my eyes. I have two
wings - with four wing-fingers and a wing-thumb - that when spread, measure
just about 30 feet from tip to tip (estimation, I think I've said 20' on
occasion). My tail is about 60% of his total body length of about 12 feet
(again, an estimation, I don't very large). My tail does not have a tail-
spade or other adornments, and no ridges run down my spine. My claws and
horns are of a very dark silvery color, almost a metallic blue or black.

Not convinced about that; there are certainly nomadic dragons out there,
and it's pretty difficult to hoard when you're always on the move. :)

I hoarde keyboards. Computer keyboards, that is. I've got a regular one,
a roll-up one (called the Virtually Indestructible Keyboard) and a Zboard.
They had a nice backlit one at EB Games, but when I went back in to get it
it was gone.....

I tend to hoarde any computer parts I can get my hands on. Glad I do,
too; sometimes new parts just don't work as well as their older
counterparts.

Do you have any TypeMatrix keyboards? I like them but my friends find it
a bit annoying having backspace and enter keys right in the middle of
the board.

Personally, I seem to have picked up a hoarding tendancy with a penchant
towards *shiny* mythic-related objects. Anything from Dragons to Pegasi to
Unicorns and beyond... I also love those little medieval figurines. They
have a nice green dragon in that collection. Have to find their website...

As would I. *sighs and leans further over keyboard*
But unfortuantely, my duties require me to keep the balance of peace in my
neck of the woods. The whole 'circle of life', humans v nature, ethereal
balance of life thing. Luckilly, my forest has an internet connection. The
hardest part is trying to explain my 'job' to those annoying little mice!
All they think about is hiding and eating. I do have a companion wolf
though. Makes the evenings pass much quicker than spending it alone in my
clearing. You should see it one day. It's quite nice, but I don't know if
you'll fit though the canopy!

Nope, I've only got the ones I said. Feel free to send me any, though.....
Actually, no. Feel free to send me any /unique/ keyboards, as I don't want
1000 standard 104-key generic keyboards that I have to get rid of.....

Long story short, I turned myself in to protect my people. I was
originally sentenced to death, but some of my people argued on my behalf
and got it reduced to banishment. They tried to strip me of my power,
to ensure that I wouldn't break my banishment, but the apparatus failed,
and instead tore my essence from my trueform, sending it drifting
through whatever unbodied essences drift through, until it latched onto
this host.

I don't think so. Although it's far from defenseless, as my magic that
keeps it alive without me also would protect it.....

I can adjust my size, I think I'll be OK.....

Well, I'm not going to probe into why you were being sentenced, but if it
was to protect your people, then you're a very brave person. Worthy of the
title of Ehlmanai. I haven't seen one in centuries, but it amazes me that I
should find so many here...

Makes sence. Food and shelter shouldn't pose a problem either, right? But if
you were seperated at said location, the first place to look would be there,
right?

Well, you're more than welcome to come and visit my 'domain' if you will.
It's about the only place I feel comfortable in my Trueform, and completely
isolated from any mortal contact, unless I will it otherwise. Oh, by the
way, I'm not the only interesting thing in there. You're quite likely to run
into all manner of creatures there. I do believe you might even met a
Centaur, but her type tend to keep to themselves a lot more than the others.
LIke I said, if you're willing, the gate is always open...

I'm looking for IBM model M 'boards, the one I had, born in 1985,
finally died on me a couple months ago and it's sorely missed... I
detest these damn mushboards they sell these days.
