Book Report: Revenge of the Sith [message #247263] So, 16 April 2006 09:15
Brett McConnie
Although the novelizations of the movies are canon there are still many
differences between the books and the movies. Sometimes these differences
enhance our understanding and appreciation of the movies and other times
they contradict certain aspects of the movies and must therefore be ignored.

Starting with TPM, and continuing with the other books, I have previously
examined each of the movie novelizations and looked at the areas where they
differ from the movies they are based on. Many of these points have been
raised before in discussions but some have never been mentioned. Some of
these points are very minor while others reveal important information. If
you have never read these books these reports may open your eyes up to the
things you have been missing. If you have read them then it might serve to
refresh your memory on an oft forgotten piece of the Star Wars universe.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005) by Matthew Stover

First sentence - The skies of Coruscant blazed with war.

Last sentence - Then he rides his eopie off into the Jundland Wastes, toward
the setting suns.

- Sora Bulq and Depa Billaba have turned against the Republic. Other Jedi
are rumoured to have betrayed their Order as well.

- The opening battle runs much longer than in the movie.

- Anakin is designated Red 5, just like Luke would be.

- Anakin makes a ridiculously daring manoeuvre down the trench of a cruiser
destroying some vulture droids and just barely escaping with R2 intact.

- Obi-Wan does not witness R4's destruction but learns of it from Anakin.

- R2-D2 easily fends off 2 buzz droids with Obi-Wan's guidance.

- Obi-Wan expects that Dooku will once again ask him to join him. Dooku
wants to recruit him but Sidious wants him dead.

- Grievous warns Dooku of the arrival of the two Jedi and objects to the
Sith Lord's plan of dealing with them himself.

- Dooku plans to build an Empire for humans only and enlisted the aid of
aliens so that he can destroy them. He intends to create a Sith army with
himself as their leader.

- Dooku throws a chair and table at Anakin during their duel.

- Grievous kills an officer on his bridge promoting the next highest ranking
crew member to fill the position.

- A young Lieutenant Commander negotiates with General Grievous during the
hostage crisis, it is Needa from ESB.

- Anakin believes he has lost R2 and Obi-Wan cautions him that being a Jedi
means letting of things.

- Obi-Wan alerts the Coruscant authorities that he, Anakin and Chancellor
Palpatine are about to crash the Invisible Hand onto the surface of the
planet.

- The Jedi were in the process of tracking Darth Sidious when Palpatine was
kidnapped. They were very close indeed but they lost the trail when they had
to focus on rescuing the Chancellor. Mace says that Palpatine isn't a
suspect because he already controls the galaxy they therefore suspect either
Mas Amedda or Sly Moore of being a Sith Lord.

- After his nightmare about Padmé's death Anakin doesn't divert her
attention by mentioning the Japor Snippet he simply tells of her the dream.

- Palpatine puts a resolution before the Senate giving him direct control of
the Jedi Council which forces Mace, Yoda and Obi-Wan to conspire against
him.

- The Jedi are aware that Sidious and Dooku are on opposite sides
controlling events for their own purposes and that the war they've all been
fighting has been a plot by the Sith.

- Grievous prepares to move the Separatist leaders to Mustafar before the
transmission from Sidious. He's involved in an argument with Nute Gunray
over leadership of the Separatist movement.

- Palpatine talks to Anakin of Darth Sidious and says, if he ever met him,
he would ask the Dark Lord if he could end the war with whatever power he
had.

- Anakin wants to be a Jedi Master because only a Master can access
forbidden files which may contain information he can use to save Padmé.

- Bail Organa and Mon Mothma plan, with a group of Senators, a movement
against Palpatine. They bring Padmé into their confidence. At first she
wants nothing to do with them, then she wants to enlist Anakin's aid but
they do not know where his allegiance lies and so she must keep their
meetings secret.

- Obi-Wan, Yoda and Mace Windu discuss what it means to bring balance to the
Force. They don't know but begin to think it may not be a good thing.

- Padmé believes she's having a boy; Anakin a girl.

- The Jedi discuss sending Yoda away so that they appear weaker to Sidious
making him move out into the open so that they can catch him.

- 2000 Senators have signed a petition asking Palpatine to lay down his
emergency powers. Padmé wants to bring in the Jedi but the others aren't
sure they can be trusted. Padmé surprises herself by realizing that the one
Jedi she knows can be trusted is Obi-Wan.

- When they part as friends for the last time Anakin mentions Asajj Ventress
and Obi-Wan refers to the events of AOTC when they went on separate missions
for the first time. Anakin doesn't want to split up the winning team.

- Palpatine asks Anakin to be present during a meeting with a cabal of
Senators who he says are plotting against him. Palpatine says their leader
is Padmé with whom Obi-Wan has had close, private contact. When the
Chancellor meets with the group of Senators representing 2000 Anakin makes
them all nervous and his presence is understood to be a threat.

- On Utapau Obi-Wan carefully uses the Force to select a dragonmount, Boga,
and tells the wrangler that he offers the freedom of his planet as payment.

- Obi-Wan believes that, when he dies, he and Anakin will be together.

- Palpatine offers Anakin anything he wants, anything at all. Anakin asks
for a Coruscant speeder, The Senatorial Apartment building and the Corellian
system.

- When Grievous tells Obi-Wan that he was trained by Darth Tyranus himself
Obi-Wan replies "you mean Count Dooku? What a curious coincidence. I trained
the man who killed him."

- When Anakin talks to Palpatine of his destiny the Chancellor tells him
"you are the Chosen One, chosen by me."

- Despite seeming to object to the Council's decision to send Obi-Wan and
not Anakin to deal with Grievous it was all part of Palpatine's plan to
separate the two friends and convert Anakin to the dark side without
interference from his Master.

- Sidious hid his Lightsabre in a statue in his office and placed it in his
sleeve just before the Jedi arrived to arrest him.

- When Anakin returns to the Jedi Temple to tell Mace of his discovery he is
unable to speak and is clearly in a state of shock. Mace repeatedly asks him
if he is injured but Anakin takes a long time to make any response. He is in
no condition to join the Masters on their mission and so Mace tells him to
remain behind.

- Anakin leaves the Jedi temple through the front door against the strong
advice of Shaak Ti who is guarding it.

- Palpatine makes a recording of his encounter with Mace Windu and his posse
and uses it as evidence of their treachery before the Senate.

- Kit Fisto is decapitated and his head lands on the Chancellor's desk.

- Anakin enters Palpatine's office through the window, opening it with his
lightsabre.

- Mace cuts Palpatine's lightsabre in half and the pair move out onto a
ledge outside of the Chancellor's office.

- Mace is a master of Vaapad which draws on the dark side. When Palpatine
hurls lightning at him it does not touch him but simply passes through like
a closed circuit and then returns to Palpatine with greater power.

- The Tantive IV journeys to Kashyyyk and picks up an escape pod with a life
sign which its crew is unable to identify but which is definitely not
Wookiee.

- Leaving Utapau Obi-Wan is pursued by enemy ships and makes a series of
random hyperspace jumps to lose them. He then picks up a signal from the
Jedi Temple announcing the war is over and ordering him to return home.

- Obi-Wan uses the Jedi mind trick on a couple of Senate guards to allow
himself and Yoda to proceed through the Senate building with Bail Organa.

- Bail Organa wants to speak out against the new Emperor but Padmé stops him
as other Senators who have spoken up have been dealt with by the new regime.
She tells him to vote for Palpatine but to keep doing what he doing to
remove him from office. He says that could take 20 years and Padmé says she
won't live that long.

- Darth Vader says a lot during the massacre on Mustafar. He makes several
wisecracks as the Separatist leaders beg for their lives.

- Yoda warns Obi-Wan against watching the security files in the Jedi Temple.
The young Jedi says "I am not afraid," to which Yoda replies "you should
be."

- Yoda deflects Force lightning onto the Royal guards knocking them out
instead of throwing them with the Force as he enters the Chancellor's
private chamber.

- Vader offers Obi-Wan a way out before their fateful duel. He tells him to
walk away, go meditate, disappear.

- With 3PO's help R2 drags Padmé's body aboard her ship.

- Bail Organa asks Yoda if he is wounded, "only my pride," he replies.

- Obi-Wan doesn't tell Anakin that he failed him and when Obi-Wan reaches
the shore they don't say anything. Anakin immediately moves to leap over
him.

- Yoda talks with Qui-Gon Jinn who tells him he can retain consciousness,
even physical being, after becoming one with the Force.

- Bail Organa tells the Jedi that he may appear to be doing disturbing
things in the days to come but that he'll never betray the legacy of the
Jedi and won't surrender the Republic to the Sith.

A great service, Brett! I think the novelizations add much more to Lucas'
intentions and to our understanding of the PT than they contradict. To that
point, I think all fans with questions and those who can't understand why
there are certain "plotholes" should read them.

Minor point and maybe not even worth mentioning, but the exact quote is,
"Until this very moment, he had never realized he'd always expected, for no
discernable reason - That when he died, Anakin would be with him."

To me, "be together" implies that they will still be a team. The way Stover
works this short passage into the novelization was really exciting. I'm
currently in the middle of reading it for the first time, and I must say
that ROTS is turning out to be the best adaptation of the novels for me.

I actually considered that very point before posting but went with it
anyway. Thanks for posting the exact quote. You're right about the book. It
is by far the best of them all. The novelizations of the prequels have been
excellent and I'd advise anybody who doesn't like the movies to give the
books a go and use your imagination to provide the pictures. I'd like to see
the original trilogy adapted into full length novels by some new writers.
The original books were great when I was a kid but they lack the emotional
depth and additional background content that one finds in the newer books.

I took it to mean that Anakin would be with him because he would be
the one killing Obi-Wan. I think he foresaw his own death at Vader's
hands, and that's why he wasn't afraid to drop his guard when Luke
arrived. He knew Luke would eventually bring him back to the light
side.

If anyone can do them justice, it would be Matthew Stover. Luceno
isn't bad either. I enjoyed the setup to RotS in Labyrinth of Evil.

Exactly. That's why the exact wording Stover uses is so important, IMO.

The closest would be the revelation of Anakin falling into a pit of lava in
the ROTJ novelization. The one I'd most like to se adapted is ANH. It's a
good book, but the language makes it a bit hard to get through.
