| Googling usenet before the first prequel [message #247251] |

I thought I'd browse through Google's usenet archive, for discussions
about episode 1, as it was in the beginning stages. Reading the
speculation about plots, titles, cast, dates, etc. It's pretty cool.
GL actually announced that he was making the prequels, in '93.
- Most of the assumptions were that the Clone wars were going to take
place in Episode 1.
- some speculated that Anakin would turn into Darth Vader in episode 2,
leaving 3 for the fall of the republic.
- I thought it was funny how Sam Jackson campaigned on talk-shows to be
in the prequels, saying that he would play "anybody, Lando's Dad, Luke's
slave..." just to be in the movies. LOL
- people thought the movies were going to be released one year apart. In
addition, it was originally believed Episode I would come out in '97
(20th anniversary). According to that timetable, people thought Episode
III would be out in 1999. =-O
- on the day Lucas announced the title for Episode I, one of the first
threads was titled "let's just call it Episode One." :-D
- one rumour was that instead of using an actor to play Ob-wan, Sir Alec
Guinness' face would be superimposed on someone's body.

That info was really interesting, thanks for taking the time to post it.
Sure beats scrolling through the archives to find the most intriguing
bits. If GL would have decided to paste Sir Alec Guiness' face on some
actor's body it would have been quite disturbing. Besides disturbing,
the image would have been a little off in terms of age of the character
unless they took his face from the movies he made in the 50's or 60's.
I can just imagine a black and white face of Guiness' contrasting
horribly against the CGI of the rest of the movie. ;P

Here's a good one. It's the "New Star Wars Films FAQ v1.7", dated Aug 25
*1994*. (remember GL didn't start working on the script until November 1994)

Yikes. On top of Star Wars, they've been promising Indy IV for over 12
years now!!
99. I know this isn't Star Wars, but I heard that there will be a new
Indiana Jones movie, is that true?
Answer: Yes, according to Lucasfilm, this project is "definitely
happening" and will start production within "six to eight months."

"Chip Cataldo has said that his source tells him that the films will
"feature the Millennium Falcon, Wookies, IG-88, IG-72, IG-55, IG-30, and
IG-4 and The Mandalorian Shock Force of 100,000 soldiers." The
Mandalorian Troopers, apparently have the same armor as Boba Fett."
Man, I had wished the Clone Wars had something to do with the
Mandalore's like that FAQ speculated. There still was no backstory on
where the armor came from like I expected.
<sigh>
