Who were the 3 bufoons that went with Mace Windu to arrest Palpatine? I
have never seen such incompetence among supposed Jedi Knights. What a
sad spectacle. 3 Jedi Knights dispatched in 10 seconds.

well, 2 of them were Saesee Tiin and Kit Fisto, both accomplished Jedi
Masters. I don't know why George Lucas killed them off like that. i
don't remember the 3rd guy's appearances

That always bothered me, too. It could have been a really cool battle, but
turned into a laugh. The only possible reason I can come up with is that
Palpatine was so powerful that he could have killed them all (even Windu)
that easily, but left Windu alive in order to turn Anakin.

Yeah, it could have been a great battle. My guess is that George told
the producers "We have to do this quick to keep the movie shorter than
2,5 hours". LIKE WE WOULDN`T WATCH A 3 HOUR STAR WARS MOVIE....
Hell, I spent 3 hours just watching a fat monkey go nuts in new york, I
didn`t enjoy the shit...

Basically they were taken completely by surprise at just how powerful
Palpatine was. No Jedi has even seen a Sith Lord in 1000 years, let
alone had to fight one. Added to that is the fact that they still
believed Palpatine to be a defenceless old man (Yoda uses a similar
"pretend to be weak" strategy).

I don't know about that. Anakin had just informed Mace that Palpatine was a
Sith Lord so it seems like they should have been somewhat prepared.

They were "somewhat" prepared, just not prepared "enough". :-)

this is a great answer and indeed the most accurate one that I have heard
explained...
