May the force be with you... [message #247140] Mi, 12 April 2006 23:25

Ewan McGreggor once complained about the following:

Somebody, a fan, said to him: 'May the force be with you, Ewan!'

Ewan said about it: 'What the hell did that mean?!'

I think the fan meant that were a spitiual/mystical world or simply
'The Force' exist... then may it be with you.

Why did Ewan make such a big deal about it?

Or am I making a big deal about it ;)

Let me get this straight. Ewan McGregor has played Obi Wan Kenobi in three
Star Wars films, and he didn't know what "May the force be with!" meant?

He's a good actor, but not incredibly bright. ;-)

My problem is when actors get on a political soapbox. It really turns me
off, whether they have Right, Left or Centrist leanings. If I want a
political debate, I'll turn on C-SPAN. When I hear an actor speak, I want
to hear about acting in general; his/her roles past, present and future or
trivia and gossip about his/her life. In other words, I want to be
entertained, not proselytized to.

That said, I have no idea if McGregor is bright or not. I was just making a
little joke, okay Ewan? heheh

Hi Karrde,
So being bright or not is somehow connected with being political?
:-)

The thing is: once you are famous you sort of loose the right to be
un-official. I don't think we can demand from even our favourite actors to
be engaged with their (former) characters, or un-political for that matter.

(This might make me the most boring poster of the day :-)

No, it was a completely diferent thought. However, I don't think it's very
bright for actors to become overly political. One way or another, it will
turn off a certain number of their fans.

I don't expect them to be un-political. Sometimes those questions come up
in interviews. Those questions don't have to be answered, or can be
answered so as not to alienate fans. The ability to be interviewed and NOT
let on where you stand politically is a brilliant display of politics in
itself.

They have a right to their own views like everyone else, of course, but I
agree. Politics in general turn me off, doesn't matter what the source is.
Still can't figure how anyone who has seen a Star Wars movie, especially
someone who's been in three of them, wouldn't understand the phrase, "May
the force be with you." Maybe he was being sarcastic.

My take on it, for what it's worth, is that McGregor was basically saying
that it made no sense for this guy to be telling him that the force was with
him being that a)the Force is a fictional creation b) Obi-Wan (who would
actually know of the Force) is a fictional creation, and that c) Shouldn't
the guy spend more time thinking of an intelligent thing to say to/ask
McGregor rather than "May the Force be with you.". I mean, Jesus. How lame
is that?

Kinda like Christopher Lee's response when asked who he thought would win if
Saruman and Dracula had a fight. I think Lee looked at the fan and, in
disgust, retorted "What a ridiculous question!" or some such. He sounded
most unimpressed.

Hm, perhaps, but now it seems they're just all wound up too tightly and need
to grow a sense of humor. I can understand this coming from Christopher Lee,
being old school as he is, but doesn't he realize how stupid he looks in
those Dracula movies, not to mention the Howling movie he was in (or was he
in more than one?). Those movies were godawful, lemme tell ya.
