Do we know anything about his life? Was he a Ranger or somehow involved
in the politics of Gondor?

To which Arathorn are you referring?
Arathorn I was the great-great-grandfather of Aragorn II (the Aragorn
that is a member of the Felllowship of the Ring), and Arathorn II was
the father of Aragorn II.
Arathorn I died in T.A. 2848.
Arathorn II died in T.A. 2933.
Most of what we know about Arathorn II is told in Appendix A.I.v of 'The
Lord of the Rings' - the bit titled "Here follows a part of the Tale of
Aragorn and Arwen".
As far as I can tell, he was, like his fathers before him for nearly a
thousand years, Chieftain of the Dunedain of the North, the remnants of
Arnor (the North Kingdom). During that time the Northern Dunedain were
"a secret and wondering people". As such, Arathorn II was probably not
involved with the realm of Gondor at all, though there is the case of
his son, Aragorn II, who did ride far to the south and serve in the
armies of Rohan and Gondor.
Arathorn II was only sixty when he died, being "shortlived for one of
his race", and had only been Chieftain for about three years. It is
possible to speculate that, like Aragorn II, he travelled south in his
youth, but I don't believe we are ever told what he did in his youth,
other than chasing after Gilraen (his future wife and future mother of
his son).
