There are several similar "mindreading games" that all operate on the
same idea. This is probably the most clever one I've seen, but once you
know the underlying reason it's fairly simple arithmetic.

EXPLANATION:
Step 1: So you pick a number, jumble the digits and subtract. The key:
the result will /always/ be a multiple of nine.
Why? Well, 1000 - 1 = 999. 100 - 10 = 90. 1 - 100 = -99. It's easy to
see that a one followed by some number of zeroes, minus another 1
followed by some number of zeroes, will always be a multiple of nine.
From here you can see that this is true for any digit, not just 1--for
example, 8000 - 80 = 8*(1000 - 10) = 8*990, also a multiple of 9.

So consider what you're doing when you jumble the number and subtract.
For example, if you pick 8163 and subtract 3186, look at what happens to
each digit:
8163 - 3186
= (8000 + 100 + 60 + 3) - (3000 + 100 + 80 + 6)
= (8000 - 80) + (100 - 100) + (60 - 6) + (3 - 3000)
And we know that each of the terms in parentheses is a multiple of 9, so
the entire thing is a multiple of 9.

Step 2: The sum of the digits of a multiple of 9 is itself a multiple of
9. (If you didn't know this fact before, you do now. It's not too
difficult to prove.) At the very end, you're providing all but one of
the digits. The game knows that all of the digits add up to a multiple
of nine, so since it's just missing one digit it can figure out which
one--it adds them up and subtracts this number from the next highest
multiple of 9. This is why you're not allowed to pick 0--because then
either 0 or 9 could be the missing digit (both would yield a multiple of
9), and it wouldn't know which to pick.

knew it was some sort of math,, but couldnt seem to figure it out since
all the numbers were random..

If you look at LFS's reply, it isn't possible to fool it. You must have done
your subtraction wrong (I did on one of my 3 tries).
