I recorded it the other night and finally got to start watching it. What a
strange movie. I am about half way through and I find it neither fun or
making sense. Shame, too, as it looks extremely well made and David Niven
is very good. Got me thinking about want he would have been like as the
real 007. Woody Allen was in it for a minute with two one liners. Can see
why they dubbed Honey's voice in Dr. No. Guess it was purely to capitalize
on the James Bond popularity.

--- I caught it myself some time ago. I had never seen it in its
entirety and let about two decades or so pass before I thought I'd give
it another go. The first half was tough to get through as it didn't
seem to have any plot or direction in mind, but once Peter Sellers met
up with Q at HQ, everything began to fall into more familiar, or
well-worn, Bond-like terrain. Joanna Pettet as Bond's daughter was
quite a looker and actually not bad in an almost Emma Peelish sort of
way - her harem costume reminded me of the one Emma Peel wore in the
Honey for the Prince episode of The Avengers. The whole Woody Allen
bit at the end reminded me of Austin Powers. Seems it was the same
team who put this film together as What's New Pussycat? Charles K.
Feldman is certainly the same producer, while Woody Allen, Peter
Sellers and Ursula Andress from WNP appear in this one as well. But
WNP was actually a funny movie, whereas CR strained at being ...
something, anything, and sort of failed on all counts. Who knows what
they were really thinking with this film, maybe it just seemed funnier
on paper, though hard to imagine how. Must've been the drugs at the
time.

Not once have I ever thought what it would be like if David Niven were 007.

I think it would not have worked. He would have been too foppish. Mind you,
he was perfect in that film...
However, strangely enough I was watching CR67 today, and found myself
thinking (not for the first time) that Terence Cooper would probably have
made a very fine Bond.

I must admit "foppish" is a pretty good word to describe Niven. Bond should
definately not be "foppish."

I always thought Blofeld's Cat should re-edit that movie like NSNA... if you
trimmed out the garbage and resequenced it, you could probably make a fine
film out of it.

David Niven would have made a perfect Ian Fleming in some biopic, though.

Yeah, but with the garbage removed it would be a 15 min short feature...

Did you learn why not having five directors work on a movie is a good
idea? What was Feldman thinking when he forgot to have ninjas in it?
It has a damn good theme song though.

But who better to play Le Chiffre than Orson Welles? Feldman was an idiot.
Too bad he didn't choose to film the damn novel.

Feldman had more money than sense, and always did. He was really best
with anthology movies anyway, like Follow the Boys (1944). In an
anthology movie, if you have 5 different directors working on it, it
doesn't really matter. Orson Welles liked Feldman personally, which is
why Welles took the job.
Val Guest essentially finished the film by adding bridge sequences
between the films that were turned in. And, yes, it's a really great
title tune (although the words reek). Herb Alpert was and still is
great.
Feldman did want to do a straight Bond film (and had asked his buddy
Ben Hecht to work on an early draft), but he knew he couldn't compete
with Connery, and the EON people didn't want Connery out, and Connery
didn't want to get pegged to the Bond image, either.
The 1967 CR is the result of letting several talented creative people
have completely free reign with no boundaries. I wish they'd filmed
the cast party... it would have been more interesting than the film is.
