OT :: Peruvian elections [message #245928] Mo, 10 April 2006 01:26

I am so sorry, I almost never post OT but I think I must...

Today we have Presidential elections here in Peru, and I must say this
were the worst ever!

We had 22 people running for the post, whatsoever, the top 3 was
composed by the worst of all of them:
1) Lourdes Flores: perhaps the best of the three, whatsoever, her people
is not good and we don't trust them.
2)Alan Garcia: He had been already president (85 - 90). He leaded the
country to bankrupt and terrorism.
3) Ollanta Humala: Former member of the peruvian Army: terrorist, racist
and full with grudge against 'upper class', as though that actually
exists here.

I didn't vote any of them, but I vote for the one who, experts say,
might be the best option for the country: he is number 4, Valentin
Paniagua: already president for almost a year, leading a transitory
government in 2000-2001. Number 5 and 6 were also the best options we
could have had.

Anyway, now, when elections is over, we well having a second round in
May. and the one who is currently winning is Ollanta Humala, number 3.
This guy and his family have said:

.. Homosexuals must be shot as they are immoral.
.. Terrorist must be free.
.. Hitler is considered evil by history because he lost.
.. The former president and his people will be shot, as he was a bad
president, hence: traitor. (there is no death penalty here, except for
betrayal to the country)
.. Chilean enterprises must be thrown out the country.
.. Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro are good leaders.
.. All kind of Media must be regularised by the state, and closed down
until the state itself considers to be accurate.
.. All Peruvian families must have 3 children, and one of them should
join the army.
.. If they don't win, they will take the country by force.

He is also accused of have been in charge of a massacre in an Andes
town. His brother took a Police Station in another town last year,
killing nine cops, but was sponsored by his brother. (he is in jail now)
He also admires the former President Velazco, a dictator who took my
family's lands, to give them to the poor ones. (The poor ones never knew
how to administrate the lands, so, these died and were lost forever)

How is he winning? Simple. Going to the poorest zones of the country,
saying things like 'you are poor and have no good opportunities because
rich and white people wanted it that way. I am and native as you, so,
vote for me'. So, he has turned us, who were lucky to have education and
whose family had worked all their lives, into the enemy.

We are so screwed right now, and also, scared. Scared because I fear my
freedom is going to die. Also, I fear they might took my house, money
and properties and that's not fair. I am so sad to announce that it
might be no hope for the Peruvian people so far. I wish I am wrong :(.

Your posting is depressing indeed but at least more informative than the
little snip that I saw on CNN-INT. I think all of us will freely admit to
total ignorance on the subject. As for me, I would have expected drug
money to play a role.

You live in a different society than most of us which is why I enjoy
reading your slant on things. If it's any consolation, many US-Americans
are also quite frustrated about basic rights at the moment. I'll keep my
fingers crossed for you.

Frustration, yes by some.. but we still have it so much better here
than most of the rest of the world. We can tend to become so insulated
against everything else going on out there. It bugs me when people
complain so much about the US; but at least we have the right to
complain and try and change things. For many, to complain means death.
Dru, I hope things work out ok for you all there. I hope those who have
been suckered in by this totally evil man do not have to come to the
realization that he's full of sh*t. He will not make things any better
for anyone. I hope the good people of your country can keep that from
happening.

I can't begin to imagine how frightening the situation must be for you.
I only hope that the other candidates can get their own messages out
to those people that Humala is targeting.

Their own basic rights or the rights of others?

Both.

I certainly sympathize with you. My wife is from San Borja and she cast her
ballot here in the states yesterday. She as with many others here that I
know are very concerned about Humala and what he would do to the country.

I suppose Flores would be the lesser of the available evils, and most likely
to continue the status quo. Putting Garcia back in office would be,
economically speaking, as insane as Humala.

Thanks everybody for your good wishes: I kinda better than yesterday,
although frustrated yet.

Anyway, Humala goes first (29,65%) and so far Garcia is second (24,95%)
and Flores (24,69%). I feel relieved (spell?) knowing Humala has not
even achieved the 30%, which means mostly of us want our freedom. We
must have a terrible economy here, but we do have freedom so far,
incredibly, even more than in USA, for what I've read.

Anony-mouse, Humala voted in Surco, a posh and classy neighbourhood. But
people forgot their class and gave him what he deserved as you and your
wife can see in this video:

http://www.frecuencialatina.com/90segundos/video/2006/4/9/Vi deo10746.rm

He was rejected by everyone who voted there and had to leave protected
by cops and members of the army under a rain of bottles and the screams
of 'murderer'. Normally, I reject violence, but he had it coming for all
these past days: every time he opened his mouth, the prize of something
went up: sugar, rice, chicken, eggs... Terrible
