Helped needed in understanding your language! :)

I just saw this interview with some of the actors in that movie which
is the modern adaptation of Shakespeare's 12th Night (sorry can't
remember what it is called), anyways the main actor, during the
interview, said to one of the main actresses, something like 'I was
macking on you a bit wasn't I?' or maybe he said 'I was macking you a
bit wasn't I?' or something.

anyways it left me wondering, what the hell is a 'macking'? :S

"Macking" or "smacking"? Probably "smacking" since I've never heard the
word "macking". Smacking means either a suggestion or hitting, so it
really doesn't fit in the context you described. Maybe he meant he was
'hitting on her', slang meaning to approach sexually. Or maybe the actor
was just an idiot...

he said macking, definately. hmm, maybe he was australian or
something...

over here smacking means hitting, never heard it mean a suggestion
though

yeah we have 'hitting on' over on this side of the pond too. if macking
means that it would certainly fit the context because they were talking
about how they were treating each other on set like their characters
treated each other in the film.

Mackin' is being a pimp daddy . . . um, or something like that.

Depending on how it's used, "macking" can mean either flirting, "snogging,"
petting or actual intercourse. From the usage above, I'd guess he meant
flirting.

To call someone a "Mack Daddy" is to say he's a player, a ladies man, etc.
He's seriously pimpin' (which doesn't mean purveyor of prostitutes in this
sense).

Slang -- the use of language so that it becomes an impediment to understanding.
A good place to go to get a handle on slang is Urban Dictionary.

thanks for that and the links. So is it a word that is only used in
some parts of America since DM had never heard of it either? where in
USA do you live, Max? how about you DM?

ah, that song 'Return of the Mack' by Mark Morrison suddenly makes some
sense now!

I'm in the southeastern US, Birmingham, Alabama, to be exact.

The only place I've every heard "mack" used was in Daria cartoons and in the
Sinfest comic strip. I'm much too old (41) to hanging out with people who
actually use "mack" in conversation. My wife, however, chaperones a youth
group, so she hears that stuff all the time.

While I'm not one to use "mack", I do, however, remember in college "smooth"
had the same meaning and connotation.

"Whatcha doin' tonight?"

(Do you have any plans this evening, and if so, what are they?)

"We're goin' down to the station and smooth on the senoritas."

(I and group of other young men from this campus are going to a local night
club to attempt flirtatious conversation with the local young women. We hope
to get to receive contact information for future dates. If chance be on our
side, some of us may be lucky enough to engage in the mating ritual this very
night.)

"Go, dog, go! Get you some of that, Chi Chi!"

(Have fun, fellow student. I wish you luck in your endeavors with the opposite
sex.)

Ya know, that sounds really stupid in retrospect. I imagine that's true about
most of my youth.

Masochist!

There are a few other AMRicans who post once in a while in AFHP. Simon Dean is
the only one I can think off the top of my head. We tend to get too much grief
from the Dan Iwerkses of the world if we admit like HP too much.

I mostly lurk here, reading the take of others on HP. I find it helps to
understand and enjoy the story. I don't usually participate in the on-topic
threads because I don't have much to add.

Here's a nice account tracing it back to the 15th century:

http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=20000803

Of the many variants there, from context it sounds like this one (the most
recent) was intended:

Since the mid 1990s, mack has been primarily college slang, used
by teens and twenty-somethings to talk about flirting or kissing.
It is often found in the construction mack on, probably by analogy
with the phrase "hit on." Mack can still be used as a noun to
refer to someone who is good at "hooking up" with members of the
opposite sex, probably through truncation of mack daddy, which,
these days, refers more often to smooth-talking teenage boys than
it does to pimps.

See the full article for how it evolved to this state of perfection ;-)

Ok, since your question wasn't really answered, here goes. It's mostly
originated from the inner city USA and me growing up in the Inner City, know
the meaning of this term.. Macking means the guy was hitting on her,
flirting, also could be used as a term of making out. It depends on the
manner in which it is used. Macking for all intents and purposes means
flirting, I hope this helps..... ;)

NC, which is east coast. I'm more from the suburbs, rather than city, so
I'm not the hippest person when it comes to slang.

Yes. It's slang. As stated earlier in the thread by someone, it's

there some white guys (like eminem) who have been known to use the term
as well. It mostly refers to flirting and hitting on someone.
