OOTP out on July 13, 2007
It's official: Warner Bros. has announced that the Harry Potter and the
Order of Phoenix movie will hit theaters on July 13, 2007!

In my mind, that makes it pretty unlikely that Book Seven will come out
on July 7, only six days before. But we'll see.

In my mind, the fact that July 7, 2007 will be the second anniversary of a
terrorist bombing makes it pretty unlikely that Book Seven will come out on
that day.

Perhaps. I wonder, though. I don't want to minimize the significance
of the bombing, but it's my experience that people are pretty resilient,
and that most people would overlook the anniversary. (Many others
wouldn't, of course.) The interaction of the book and the movie, on the
other hand, is a marketing reality.

That's a bit more plausible. But I think all these things have a big
caveat, and that's that Rowling has to finish the book according to the
schedule she's set for herself. (I think she's said she's going to try
to finish the book this year.) There are still editing revisions and
production stuff to go through before the book can be published.

IF (and I realize it's a BIG IF) JKR follows the pattern of the last
couple of books and turns it in on or before January 2007, THEN the
publisher would be able to get it on the stands by the end of July
2007.

It's my understanding that the publisher is getting each chapter to
edit as she finishes it. This is why production time is so much faster.
(Many best selling authors use this procedure.)

I think a six-month turnaround is reasonable; my doubts rest with the
antecedent--that she would in fact be able to finish the book by January
2007.

She has to make damned sure she doesn't leave any loose ends lying
around, which is a new requirement above and beyond those applying to
Books One through Six. It's simplified by the fact that she knows what
she's been working through for a dozen years, but it's not as though
she's working to a detailed road map--more like a grade-school atlas.

Besides, a later release means more time for us to speculate. :)

As any date on the calendar will equal a date in the past on which
something bad happened somewhere in the world, it would be rather silly
to let it influence something trivial as a releasedate of a book.
Especially not as noone is obliged to see a movie or read a book on any
specific date.

My comment had nothing to do with any anniversary. It had to do with
the close placement of July 7 and July 13.

And the reason I picked July 31 is that it would be Harry's birthday...
