Connery to make appearance in Casino Royale [message #244973] So, 02 April 2006 18:58

Just read this on a French James Bond site. Don't know if it's true, I
suspect not, but you never know. It seems a bit strange to cast the best 007
there has ever been as a coward.
COWARDLY CONNERY RETURNS TO BOND

Movie star SEAN CONNERY is set to make an appearance in forthcoming JAMES
BOND movie CASINO ROYALE - as a coward. Connery is famous for playing the
suave superspy in the classic 1960s movies, including THUNDERBALL and
GOLDFINGER. But his return to the 007 saga will not be as heroic - during a
scene where Bond, played by DANIEL CRAIG, has to fight, Connery's character
hides under a table. An insider says, "I'm afraid he plays a bit of a
coward."

Can't possibly be true since he is quoted as saying : "...he plays a
bit of a coward." Now anybody that knows Connery would know his
pronunciation and he would say " playsh a bit coward"

;-)

Its been said show (er um) so many times before. Why would anone give
it creedance?

--- Hides under a table during a fight scene? Sounds like it could
just be a cameo for him as he might be part of a crowd scene and the
camera would pick up on this and play it as a bit of a joke. If true.

I think we'll find this is an April Fool gag that's got onto a news site
published the day after the gag was made..

Good gag, whoever came up with it. Can't wait to see which of the
tabloids will be the first to report it as fact...

A cheesy joke like that seems to be contradictory to the tone of the film
EON is trying to create. Also, such a part, even if only a cameo, would
mark a dramatic departure from the other roles Connery has had during the
course of his career. This cannot be true.

kind of shenanigans, regardless of what they say about beefing up Bond.
I hope it's a joke, but I see that virgin.net has now picked up on the
story.

I agree completely: it's utter BS, an obvious joke. The ill-will
between Connery and EON is well-documented. What would suddenly have
caused them to make up to the extent that Connery would be prepared to
humiliate himself by doing a cheap comedy cameo part in CR?

The tabloids fell for the 'Connery as Bond's father' story which
circulated while DAD was being made, so it's no surprise they've fallen
for this as well. Let's not be so credulous, eh? :-)

Not that it was a cameo, but I think Meteor might qualify in the "why
would Connery choose to humiliate himself" department. Money talks, as
they say.

It's not always the money, sometimes the package can be persuasive.

Let's say you're offered a part in a Sci-Fi fantasy from the Academy
Award nominated director of DELIVERANCE and the brilliant POINT
BLANK

-- the resulting film is ZARDOZ.

Or how about the lead role in a film for which the spec script from an
Academy Award winner sold for $3m in a bidding war and the film's
director is white hot after two huge hits (including your last movie)

-- the resulting film is MEDICINE MAN.

So, it's easy to see how Connery could be persuaded to sign on
for a new epic from the director of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE an
THE ODESSA FILE.

Exactly. Aside from the fact that actors can only choose from the
roles which are on offer to them and which don't conflict with other
commitments, they also have no control over how the movies they make
will turn out, no matter how promising they might look on paper.
Talking about actors' 'career choices' can be a little misleading in
some regards.

Timothy Dalton once said that the only reasons to turn down a role were
if you knew in advance that the project was going to be crap, or you
knew in advance that you would be crap in it. I'm not sure that
explains 'The Beautician and the Beast', but there you go...

I'm really not sure why Tim is doing guest spots in Geraldine McEwan's
Miss Marple series when he should be starring in something like it; he
could easily have played DCI Tom Barnaby or even Peter Robinson's
DCI Alan Banks.

Oh yeah, if any bastard now options the Banks novels and has Dalton
star, I want a producer's credit (and dosh) or I am going to fucking
consult my lawyer in Tennessee....

I get the feeling that Dalton's testing the waters in the UK at the
moment. He didn't do much over here for over a decade, but in recent
years he's done 'Dunkirk', 'His Dark Materials', the Marple thing, and
now he's in the new Simon Pegg film. I hope that something like the
vehicle you describe happens for him: it'd be a far better use of his
time and talents than the made-for-TV movies (or
*should've*-been-made-for-TV movies) and miniseries he's been making in
the States.

Maybe this is why these things never come to pass: every time a casting
director comes up with a cracking idea, he does a quick internet
search, finds that you came up with it first, and drops it for fear
you'll sue :-)

Holy shit. I posted this as a lame joke, and then when it appeared in
the message I clicked on the link to find that it leads to a 'site

He's guesting in those sorts of projects because I haven't finished writing
Golem: The Divine Host for him to star in. *grins sheepishly*

Lee Edward McIlmoyle,
also has a good role for George Lazenby in that one

I have it on good authority that the part will be played by Woody Allen.
