Hello all,
Does anyone on this ng know when this "story" was written? Was it
from Fleming's notebook or was it something he was planning to include
in a future work or...?
BTW: Taittinger and "Try" from the OHMSS soundtrack go nicely with the
scrambled eggs recipe.
Thanks and Regards,
Matt

My recollection is 1959, but I reserve the right to be wrong. It seems
like Fleming was passing through LA and Chicago, about the time I was
born in November that year.

He included it as a bit in his book THRILLING CITIES. The story was
reprinted in the most recent edition of OCTOPUSSY AND THE LIVING
DAYLIGHTS.

I kept digging and found this on Matt Sherman's very good webpage
007Forever.
http://www.007forever.com/books/flemingsbond015.html
It appears from that article that Fleming wrote it in 1962 (ie a year
before his death in '63)
Can anyone else validate that date?
Regards,
Matt

I know Matt Sherman myself quite well and if he says this, you can bank on
it. Besides that he's also from New York himself.

Kees,
Considering the well informed feel of the content of Mr Sherman's
website and things I've read about and by him other places I can
appreciate your confidence in him. However, the statement "about a
year before his death" is one I've seen almost verbatum from other
sources. Just sounds a bit too much of a commonly excepted "truism"
versus actual fact.
The reason I'm seeking this info is because I'm not clear about how
that vignette came about. IIRC Fleming wrote the articles under
commision or the London Times in 1959 and 1960. Later these articles
were compiled into book form in Thrilling Cities. So the questions I
have are, did Fleming append 007INY onto his New York article as an
embellishment? Was 007INY specifically written for inclusion into TC
or is the story something he had written as the beginning of a new
novel that never happened?
BTW: While researching my questions I ran into this AFJB discussion
from a couple of years ago about whether 007INY was a "short story" or
just a fragment. I was particularly entertained how Leviathan supports
the position that it is actually a short story.

Wow! As this paragraphbegan, I was ready to wade back into this issue, but
I see it would be redundant!
You honor me, sir!

Jonathan,
You are welcome. I've consumed some of your admirable Bondia on the
web and you seem to know your stuff good sir. However, while I found
your analysis entertaining I'm still not quite convinced that it wasn't
a fragment of a bigger planned story.
I'm thinking that Fleming had written notes for a future Bond novel
project. (ala the LALD and DAF backstory research trips). Then when
when TC came about he decided to use those notes to create 007INY.
Probably will be hard to find that out but I'm working on it.
Care to try again? I'm game (but please don't shoot me).
Regards,
Matt
Leiter grinned. "Listen, I want you to talk me through that case. As if
you were reporting it to that old monster, M."

That may well be, but that doesn't make "James Bond in NY" a fragment. My
own guess would be that a lot of the material was travelogue stuff Fleming
had picked up researching LALD and DAF, but didn't use there because they
didn't quite fit his plots. Carey Cadillacs in particular seem more like
something Fleming would have liked to have used in the intro to LALD --
"There are moments of great luxury in the life of a Secret Agent" -- but
then decided that it would make more sense to have Bond picked up by a
friendly Fed instead.
So knocking off a quick drabble that put his existing research to use seems
an elegant explanation for "James Bond in NY" -- especially coupled with
Fleming's keen commercial insight, that having a short Bond piece in the
book would help it sell well!
But its construction is so thematically complete and circular that I simply
can't give credence to the notion that it's a "fragment."

Good God! My sins pursue me! (Actually, I'm very proud of that little tale.
Thanks for giving it a read.)
