Many here speculate that DD's portrait will somehow be of help to HP in
Book 7. I agree. However, I do not recall the following other
possibilities having been mentioned before:
I feel that I am on safe ground in assuming that there is also a portrait
of Sirius' father in Grimmauld Place. According to the dates in the Black
family tree, both Walburga and Orion must have spent at least 4 years
together with Tom Riddle in Slytherin. Might they reveal something upon
learning that he is a half-blood?
The thought comes to mind that Regulus might have lifted the "fake" locket
from his mother's jewelry box. Might not Walburga's portrait inadvertently
scream out a clue or two if she were to see her piece of jewelry in filthy
Harry's possession when he goes to Grimmauld Place?
Other portraits also come to mind. The Phineas Nigellus in the Hogwarts
headmaster's office is able to leave his portrait and "visit his other
painting in Grimmauld Place." (OotP, Ch. 37) Might he know something about
the locket(s) and/or be persuaded to make a quick trip for Harry to confer
with DD's portrait?
Phineas Nigellus isn't exactly wild about Harry <pun intended> (OotP, Ch.
23), but they are on speaking terms. I am sure that he will prove to be a
major source of information regarding his great-great-grandson Regulus.
Perhaps it was even Phineas who somehow gave DD the tip about the Cave.
