AFS Charter - 2 April 206 [message #243448] Mo, 03 April 2006 05:32

CHARTER

The purpose of this newsgroup (AFS) is to give fans of Star Wars an outlet
to discuss subjects pertaining to the Star Wars Saga. Covering a range of
topics from both Imperial AND Rebel views including but not limited to its
characters, its politics, its technology, its theories and rumours and a
vast amount of opinions on all subjects herein...etc

We request that the following rules be adhered to:

The posting of SPAM is prohibited.

The posting of off-topic material is not prohibited but it would be best if
the newsgroup consisted of 99% Star Wars posts and not the other way around.

Advertisements are strictly prohibited.*

Cross posting between related newsgroups is strongly discouraged.

Cross posting to non related newsgroups is strictly prohibited.

The posting of binaries is NOT allowed.

Personal attacks are strongly discouraged but impossible to control.

*What falls into the category of 'advertisements'?

An advertisement is defined as a notice designed to gain public attention or
patronage. This primarily applies to sales/auction posts as well as
trading/wanted posts... but it could also include a number of other things.
Web site promotions are OK but they are discouraged unless the site
correlates to AFS in some manner. XXX promotions are NOT ALLOWED.

We also do not care for eBay posts. There is an undefined line which
concerns Star Wars toys... please do not try to sell them, but the
occasional conversation is not discouraged. That's another thing. Sigs are
generally acceptable even if they contain advertisements as long as the
following criteria is met...

a) acceptable length (1-6 lines is good)

b) posts containing "ad" sigs are done for the benefit of the conversation,
not the advertisement.

What this boils down to, is that compact sigs with a link/advertisement are
ok as long as they do not deter from the discussion at hand.

GOOD:

I think the second death star would have been flawless had it not been for
those blasted ewoks, in reality the Empire would have decimated the
Rebellion at the Battle of Endor. Seriously, how can a bunch of little bears
armed with dull spears win a battle against trained troopers with blaster
rifles?

Can you please look at the exchange going on in the thread "Does the Force
actually exists...?" starting with the post originated from "Vincent". Is
this acceptable behavior on this forum? I know your charter states
"Personal attacks are strongly discouraged but impossible to control.", but
if you or anyone else have any authority in this forum, I would appreciate
you addressing this in some form. I think the comments to Vincent are
unacceptable and not unlike many posts I have seen in the past. Thank you.

Fortunately, neither I nor anyone else has actual authority over this forum.
I say fortunately, because I would hate to see this group censored in any
way. There is a place for moderated boards, but this is not one of them.
And if you mean "moral authority", the ability to sway someone's decisions
based on my standing in the group, I've never tried. I was off the group
for nearly two years (as soon as the earliest ROTS spoilers started to
trickle in) and don't have a long history with many of the people posting
today. I think the most we can do as a group is to not encourage this
behavior and to make a concerted effort to post interesting, on-topic
material for everyone to enjoy.

As for the thread in question, I honestly have not paid much attention to
it. Personal flame wars are generally of little interest to me. I just
ignore them and move on. I will reiterate here and now that what is going
on in that thread is inappropriate based on the charter of this group and is
discouraged. It adds nothing to the enjoyment of the group. I personally
saw nothing wrong with Vincent's initial post and though the attacks on him
were unjustified. However, that was based on one post. I don't know if he
has history prior to this with any of the people involved. Additionally, I
see that Vincent has become increasingly bitter and hostile towards this
group as a whole. Is this an indication of his true character or a result
of some of the recent attacks on him? I can't really say. All I know is
that the vast majority of posters and lurkers here would greatly appreciate
productive conversation about Star Wars from all of the individuals
involved.

So, STOP IT ALL OF YOU!

Okay, I've tried my piece at "moral authority", now we sit back and se if it
makes a difference.
