The Yoda vs Palpatine battle wasn't just a lightsaber duel, it was also
a force war between the two. So strictly speaking, it wasn't a pure
lightsaber duel if you're a sword fight purist.
The Luke vs Darth Vader battle in ROTJ wasn't as action packed as any
of the duels in the prequels.
The Anakin-Obi-Wan battle was excellent, but not the same level as the
Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon vs Darth Maul battle which was the best Lightsaber
duel, except for the ending which was too contrived.

The prequel duels were killer. In fact,yeah, Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon v/s
Darth Maul has to be one of the best.

I agree with many others in that the duel between Obi/Qui & D Maul was
the best. The best part being the first few seconds when Obi goes
after Maul after he's killed Qui. The attacks and parries in that
sequence are pure gold. My biggest criticism is the constant
interruption of cutting back to the space battle. It hamstrings the
tension of the fight.
I second KobeWan's comment that the end to this fight is contrived.
Unfortunately, it would prove to be the model for all future fights.
Why does Lucas have such a hard time killing the bad guys in a fitting
fashion? I'm sure that they're more fun to write lines for, but come
on, kill the bastard already!!

I agree, Lucas does have a hard time killing off bad guys. Or rather he
puts a lot of effort making them fight and struggle and yet when the
climax happens, it is a huge letdown as it becomes too easy.
For example, in ROTS, thru deft manipulation of his saber, Anakin was
able to cut-off both of Dooku's hands. But when Anakin succumbed to
Palpatine's suggestion of killing Dooku, why didn't Dooku use the force
and attempt to protect himself? Why didn't Dooku use a force blow that
drives Anakin off his feet, then attempt to run away while flinging
parts of the deck at Anakin? Anakin in turn eventually kills Dooku but
with the struggle of evading force blasts and flying debris.
Another example is Obi-Wan in TPM, where he used the force to pull
himself straight up and take Qui-Gonn's lightsaber and slash Darth Maul
in half. A well trained fighter would have been aware of such a move
and he could have sliced Obi-Wan in half easily.
It have been more spectacular if Obi-Wan used the force to launch
himself to the opposite side of the open shaft. Then using the force
again, kick/launch himself back towards Maul's direction while catching
the light saber and spear Maul right through the heart with the saber.

Any battle involving Christopher Lee (AOTC and ROTS) had close-in shots
of Lee swinging a saber but doing nothing else. Due primarily to Lee's
age he either had a body double or Lucas had to resort in close in
shots of Lee's face. Not too much action in the latter approach.

the worst duel is by far the one in ANH. especially when Obi Wan twirls
and slashes. its like he's learning ballet.

I like that one for the originality and uniqueness of the idea, but for the
sheer intensity of the scene and the series of moves involved in the duel I
have to say Obi/Ani.

Sort of coming down to Luke and Vader in ROTJ and Maul against OW/QG. Both
have the same tension and feeling that I sense in STAR WARS. IMO PM dosen`t
really kicks of into STAR WARS mood until the lightsaber duel at the end.
Then the film gets that feeling. Then it`s star wars all over again for me.

The whole point about the Luke vs Vader battle in ROTJ is precisely
that Luke was deliberately trying to avoid a fight, hence the lack of
action. Rather than an actual physical duel, it was actually a much
more subtle psychological struggle between father and son.

I know most won't agree but I actually liked the fight between Luke and
Vader in Empire Strikes Back. Not as flashy, really, but epic enough.
I don't like seeing Yoda with a lightsaber. I always assumed he used the
force exclusively, plus it looks silly.

I always wondered about that. Back then I'm sure it was no big deal but
after seeing the prequels, the old trilogy duels look piss poor now.

I think the best duel was count dooku and obi wan and anakin. It was
short, but sweet.
