Just saw "The Inside Man" what a cracking film, and with a very 007 theme
tune running though it.
Owen would have made a superb 007, some shots you see him standing there
with a gun and the 007 sounding music playing.
To act with J.Foster and D.Washington and at times out act them, takes some
class. Owen is the best Brit actor we have produced for many a year.
That's the problem with Craig he does not have that "presence" that someone
like Owen has, he is on screen you watch!

Excuse me?
Can Owen do anything other than a flat line reading? Can he project or
suggest anything more than one or two emotions? Can he even do
anything as basic as holding together a convincing accent from one end
of a movie to another?
Nah. He can smoulder a bit. That's about all.
There are at least thirty or forty better British actors I could name
off the top of my head without a second's thought, and Craig is among
them.

Personally speaking, when Owen's on screen, I cringe.
What work of Craig's have you seen, and what do you think Owen could
have done better in any of those roles?
In any case, Owen didn't want the role this time around and put himself
out of the frame by accepting jobs which would preclude him from doing
CR. Craig is Bond. Get used to it and don't whine.
Best

I really have to dispute both of these points. Owen is the *best*
British actor out there? Craig doesn't have his presence? That
suggests an unfamiliarity with both the work of other British actors
and with most of Craig's work to date.
Whatever strengths Owen may have he is a long way from being the best
British actor working at the moment. In addition he didn't even want
to be Bond this time around, as his choice of movies - conflicting
schedules and all - will easily confirm. Craig is Bond now - so get
used to it and don't cry over spilt milk.
Best

I liked him on the British police procedural "Second Sight", with the
twist that he was nearly blind but trying to hide his medical condition
from his collegues. That was from 9 years ago. Didn't say James Bond to
me, but I still liked it.
Don't think I'd give his acting quite such low marks.

I just saw Owen as 006 in the Pink Panther remake and I have to say he
is the finest actor who ever lived. His genius lept off the screen.

Well, it was that original sweeping statement about his being 'the best
British actor in years' which irked me, and which led to that
ill-tempered post which I withdrew a few minutes later. But that
comment rates Owen higher than Brit actors of a similar age such as
Simon Russell Beale, Ken Stott, Greg Hicks, Samuel West, Steven
Dillane, the 'Our Friends in the North' triumvirate of Christopher
Eccleston, Mark Strong, and (yes) Daniel Craig, Tim Roth, Gary Oldman,
David Tennent - that must be about ten off the top of my head without
even pausing for a second's thought, and I could rattle off another
twenty or thirty before I started scratching my head for names. Sorry,
but Owen's simply not in that league IMHO.
Oh, and you really don't want to get me started on Jude Law :-)

I just saw Inside Man too.....I don't much like Owen but I think he's very
good in this movie....Can't really see where Larry s coming from as he
spends most of his time wearing a mask.....might be good for Lone Ranger but
not Bond. I think Owen's problem is his voice....it is incredibly flat.

I'm glad to know it's not just me who thinks that. It's odd, but this
subject never seems to come up, and yet being able to inject some kind
of feeling, style, humour, emotion, tension etc into dialogue strikes
me as being a major part of an actor's job. Owen's line readings are
almost invariably pancake-flat and monotonous, and he's not underacting
or being subtle in the way that Eastwood, McQueen, Tracy, or Cooper
were - there's simply no drive or purpose behind the words he's saying.
The lines just kind of come out and lie there limply.

You mean that scene in the bank vault where the YOLT-esque music is

Oh, heck. Sorry to you as well, Tom. Had an altogether bad posting
day, I guess - feeling the need to withdraw a post, inadvertently
offending two of the afjb MVPs in one go and all. Apologies.

No worries, mate. No offence taken. I was only commenting on the visual
conjured.
And I've had plenty more bad posting days than you, sir.

My 11th grade French teacher did, and even though I understood what he was
saying, I still had to look it up just to make sure it was an actual word.

No, he was a condescending prick (and a lousy teacher to male students) who
probably thought I wouldn't understand anything he said to me in French,
which would almost be right, considering how he taught.
