I find it interesting that for 2 weeks running Dame SB has sung the "3" Bond
themes on TV. Infact last week was the 1st time ever she has sung Moonraker
to a audience, as she does not feel its her song.
Was meant for Johnny Mathis but who could not do it at the last moment so SB
stepped in to help out.
I wonder what the odds are on her singing Casino Royale?
Interesting timing

"Moonraker" would've sounded very odd with Johnny Mathis. I love Shirley's
version.

You know, I've been humming the title song for several days. That movie
had few redeeming qualities, but the music was good.

I have read that the song was written for Kate Bush originally and
she turned it down. It's easy to see how it would match her vocal
style.

It's mentioned in "Kate Bush: A Visual Documentary" and "Kiss Kiss Bang
Bang!" on page 133.
I think the idea of Johnny Mathis singing "Moonraker" is infinitely more
laughable....

....and is rumoured he actually recorded it after Bush turned them
down and it was rejected. I've not heard it, but I can easily
imagine how horrible is was.

Adam,
I completely agree. I think MR has one of the very best Bond scores,
and the title song is haunting and beautiful. John Barry should be
very proud of it--in fact, he probably is.

Broccoli and Wilson will choose some bland pop star for Casino Royale's
main theme. But, for old time's sake, having Shirley Bassey sing one
more Bond theme song would be spectacular, even though she will be 69
this year.

I'm not convinced by this. It makes me think of what Robbie Coltrane
said when asked at the time of GE whether a new Bond film was
appropriate for the 1990s: he said that a 1960s Bond film wouldn't be,
but a 1990s Bond film was. Shirley Bassey's Bond themes were great,
but they and her singing style are very much of their time, and to have
her sing the next theme would scream 'retro' as much as having Bond
driving his old Bentley. (As a matter of fact, I'm not too sure about
the use of the Aston Martin DB5 in CR, but since the rest of the film
looks to me to be shaping up nicely, that's a minor quibble.)
Also, many of us once believed that it would be great to have Connery
come back and reprise his role as Bond once more for old times' sake.
'Spectacular' is not an adjective I've heard used often to describe the
results when he did so. Perhaps there's a lesson to be drawn from that
(and from innumerable other 'comebacks').
Best
Phil

I was commenting about the music in "Casino Royale", although I do like
the MR score.
