Hello,
maybe somebody in one of these groups can answer this. Is the new
Latvian translation of "The Lord of the Rings" ("Gredzenu Pavēlnieks")
by Ieva Kolmane any good? I'm talking about the book, not the movies.
The reason I ask is this: I'd like to give it as a gift to my father who
liked the movies very much. But I myself speak very little Latvian
(we're a diaspora family without much ties to the old country), so I
have no way to tell if the translation is good or bad. And I don't want
to give it unless it is good.
I'm thankful for any help. It'd be great if you could answer in English
(or German) since as I said my Latvian is not good at all.

I haven't read it, but I've heard it's very good -- and Kolmane is a
very highly respected translator.

Linard, I've only seen a small excerpt, but it was from a part of the
book I was very familiar with, and I was thrilled at how it came out.

Remarkable. How did you deduce he was a fake?

The post meets certain criteria that fit a model previously identified
as being typical of russian baltophobic propaganda. Once enough
criteria are met, the rejoinder becomes automatic.

So what are the criteria, btw? Never know when one may need to unmask
russian baltophobic propogandists.

I guess if you can't speak Latvian, but actually claim Latvian origin, you
must be a Russian Baltophobe. It certainly can't be because you're asking
whether a Latvian Tolkien translation is well done. I'll have to ask my
Latvian friend - who meets these criteria - if she's a Russian Baltophobe.
Cross-posting to soc.culture.baltics has certainly dragged down the
generally friendly nature of the tolkien newsgroups.

The poster who dragged down the friendly nature of your group has long
dragged down the nature of our group -- forgive him, for he knows not
what he does.
