What was the first Bond film you saw and where did you see it? Movies,
Drive-in, DVD? Mine was LALD at the drive-in with parents. I remember it was
part of a double feature with some Planet of the Apes movie, lol

Thunderball, YOLT re-release at a drive-in with my dad. The first movie
I remember seeing, period.

Something on TV... but before I was able to go to school (I remember
because I got cranky that I couldn't watch another Bond film later
because I had school the next day...)
So... sometime before 1977... but I can't give you more than that.
I do have an early memory of the Bond Jet Pack in Thunderball...
whether that's from the first, the one I couldn't watch or a later
memory I can't say.

Double-bill of FRWL and DAF at the cinema.

On TV: I think either DN or GF, or, if not, whichever Bond film was on
ITV on Christmas day 1980. I'd seen a lot of clips from Bond films on
TV before I ever saw one of the movies in its entirety, which may be
one reason that my memory's a little foggy here.
In the cinema: a double-bill of FYEO and MR. Must've been FYEO's
second run, which would probably make the date late 1981.

According to

that would be TMWTGG, at ten past six.

I'm 100% certain that TMWTGG wasn't the first Bond film I saw, so I
must be out by one year, making the first Bond film I saw on television
DN in Christmas 1981. That may mean that my first experience of a Bond
film was seeing FYEO in the cinema, and while I did catch the
re-release where it was double-billed with MR, I'm now increasingly
convinced I must have seen it on its first release as well, since I
remember buying a few magazines for their FYEO coverage.
Great link, David - many thanks for helping to jog my memory!

I was 12 years old when I saw DAF upon its release at the Gateway
Theatre Pittsburgh PA in 1971. Alas its long gone sniff sniff.
GF on ABC TV shortly before that.

In 1977, I can distinctly remember a friend of mine looking in the newspaper
for movie to see. He came up with TSWLM, but I declined, lol. I wasn't into
Bond until I saw MR at the cinema. Then, I was hooked. I remember that movie
being a blockbuster at the time and everyone in their early/mid teens loved
it, because of the cool gadgets and stunts.

"Moonraker", in 1979, at the Odeon Cinema in Newport, Wales (no longer a
cinema, alas).
Though I enjoyed it a fair bit at the time (while wincing at some of the
silly humour), MR is now one of my least favourite Bond films.

I guess I was pretty naive with Bond movies at the time, because my friends
and I were ecstatic about the movie. Now, of course, it's simply good
escapism but not one of my favorite Bond films. Funny what age does to

Does anybody have any links to contemporary reviews of MR? I'd be
interested to see how critics responded in 1979, and EOFFTV
(http://www.eofftv.com/) doesn't appear to have a 'Press' section for
this movie. It seems to me that MR is now widely regarded as a low
point in the series by long-term fans, but the external reviews as
collated by IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes come up with a suprising number of
positive responses, even from within the last few years:

Many, many thanks for this. Was this Derek Malcolm?
> Well, she did have big tits....
If it was Malcolm, he did once announce in the 'Guardian's pages that
he was a bum man rather than a tit man, which he put down to his
public-school education. This would explain why he missed Dolly's more
obvious attractions, but moreover would fall under the category of 'too
much information'.

GF, at the time it was released, at the Riverside Theater on Lorain
Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. Had to talk my mother into letting me go in
spite of "Pussy Galore."
The site of the Riverside Theater is now a Walgreen's Drug Store. And

Ah. I forgot to mention that one of the wonders of British English is
that 'public school' in fact means private school, ie fee-paying. What
you'd call a 'public school' is what we'd call a 'state school'. It's
wonderfully nonsensical.
What Malcolm meant, I think, was that single-sex boarding schools are
notorious hotbeds of, um, curiosity and experimentation among teenage
boys, and that his preference for derrieres might in some way have been
influenced by this.

I don't have any links, but I recall reading a review of it in the Daily
Express that commented on Moore 'sleepwalking through his latest Bond
film' and pretty much dismissing the film.

December 1965, Thunderball, at the Paramount Theater in Ashland, KY,
with my parents. It is still there, but is now an entertainment venue
for concerts and plays. It was restored to some of its previous
grandeur, but I miss watching movies from the balcony, where one could
throw popcorn on the ushers.

That was *you*?!

I thought that had to do with the educable public, the children of the
peerage, being able to attend such schools while the unwashed masses were
expected to receive no education at all.

I thought those were "council schools", schools run by the municipal
council. I take it you don't have school districts. What is the
difference?

I had a feeling I knew what he meant but didn't wish to think about it for
too long.

I'd never thought of that, and I think you may be right.

These days 'state school' seems to be the preferred term, and I haven't
heard the phrase 'council school' recently - this is probably because
local councils have far fewer powers than they used to in matters of
education, and, well, just about everything else, really.

Goodness. I didn't know your national civil service had taken over primary
and secondary education as well. Thanks.

By no means do you want to get me started on the shifts in balance
between regional and national political bodies in the UK. Within days
you'd be checking out Scojo's* posts so that you could read something
less single-minded and obsessive.

"Tonight, on the abc Sunday night movie... < cue James Bond
theme tune >"
Back in the early 1970's, ABC television in the U.S. would
air a movie every Sunday night. And occasionally one of the
Bond films would be rotated into the schedule. I recall
seeing FRWL, GF, DAF, LALD, TMWTGG, YOLT, and OHMSS (the
re-edited two-part version) all on the ABC sunday night
movie. By my best recollection, this would have been
between 1974 and 1978. I specifically recall DAF being
aired opposite THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN which was my
favorite tv show at the time (my family did not own a VCR
yet , if they were even widely available circa 1975?).
Then, in 1979, I saw my first Bond film in the theater:
Moonraker. Loved it. Still do.

Ohhh...yes, the memories.... My mother and sister would love to watch
figure skating(*shudder*), which meant that on the weekend if there was
figure skating (*shudder*) on TV, they would own the set. But if on Sunday
night there was the ol' <cue James Bond theme tune >, then my Dad and I
owned the set.
On a personal and sentimental note, the last thing I was able to do for my
Alzheimer's-stricken father before he passed away was play him
"Thunderball." He may not have had much left of this world, but my memory
of the way his face lit up when the Bond theme played and the figure
strolled into the gunbarrel view continues to make me happy to this day.
Thank you, Mike. Long live "Moonraker."
