The Poossy Galore Story [message #240358] Di, 14 März 2006 07:46

Watched a documentary called The Bond Girls. So, the story goes that
Cubby insisted on the name Pussy Galore to be used in GF (his assertion
of creative rights) at a still relatively innocent and naive time when
the thought of even using Pussy as a word, never mind the name of a
female character, even if it was in the book, was outrageous, to say
the least. But Cubby wanted it and it looked like everything was going
to go his way until the suits at UA finally stepped in and said, "Nope,
you can't do that." When all was said and done, Cubby won - thanks to
Sean's pronounciation of the name as "Poossy." Doesn't explain how
Honor Blackman saying it properly, as Pussy, managed to slip past all
the suits' radars, though.

FWIW, there's another story which did the rounds for several years:
for a time, EON were under such pressure from UA that there was serious
consideration given to renaming the character 'Kitty Galore', even
for some time after filming with Honor Blackman had commenced.
However, during the shoot, a member of the royal family visited the
set, and the next day the headline photos appeared in the British
tabloids accompanied by the headline 'Pussy and the Prince', making
the character's name a fait accompli.

I think there's a chance the story might be apocryphal, but as it's
been reported by several fairly reliable sources I thought I'd pass
it on.

Best

--- I suppose some research into back issues of those tabloids would
sort out if that were true or not. But if true, I think that in itself
would've legitimized the use of Pussy.
