Hi Everyone,

I'm a fairly new fan here. I got into Zappa bout 5 months ago through
my boss. So far I've got Freak Out through Fillmore East, JABLA, SY,
SATLTSADW and JFH. I'm working on getting all the CDs before I even
think about vinyl since so much of the early stuff is so expensive.

I'm finding out more with every day that Zappa's music is like crack for
my mind. I just constantly want more. haha

The other day someone finally hooked me up with the vinyl mix of Ruben &
the Jets which was awesome to finally hear. I like it better than the
remix except for Cheap Thrills (I think the remix of CT swings a little
better, it's a bit snappier).

Anyway, I've been lurking here for about a month and reading lots of
good conversation so I'll be around where I have something constructive
to contribute.

Looking forward to good discussion and learning a lot.

To go along with Freak Out, I recommend Joe's Corsage. It's a great
companion for hearing earlier versions of a few songs. And of course,
many others will recommend many more great cd's/LP's, etc.

Fer gosh sakes, hurry up and get everything that came out between 72
and 75! Come back in 6 months when you find what's left of your mind.

One thing you'll definitely learn is not to believe everything you read
on affz. I think Marc's having you on, for instance. The Joe's Corsage
series, besides being hard to find at your local record shop, are pretty
much for hardcore completists only.

As for recommendations, sounds like you might be ready for the 70s.
Might I recommend Lather? It's a major purchase, but well worth it.

Welcome to affz, where you'll learn how the kill filter works on your
news reader.

Hell yes. Lather is the one thing I'm really missing from the CDs that were
stolen when we were robbed just before Christmas. OTOH it was the only Frank
that went out the back door.

The YCDTOSA series are good introductions to most of the variants of Frank's
work. 1 and 3 are probably the most approachable.

How true.

It is a never ending journey, but it is quite fun.

At the risk of getting flamed, I would say that your plan is a good
one. You may even want to consider bypassing some of the vinyl
versions completely if you decide that you like the sound of a certain
CD.

That being said, you will eventually want vinyl copies of certain
albums. (I won't mention them here. You'll discover them soon enough
yourself.) When that time comes, you will need this site:
http://www.lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/vinylvscds/
It is being maintained by a wonderful individual that currently posts
here under the nom de plume of Spindles in Beat Pops.

You'll love it. It's a way of life.

I agree with you here. Then again, "Cheap Thrills" is one of the few
songs from CWR&TJ that I like on either version. But that's just me.

I look forward to that as well.

As for your collection, I have some suggestions.

First, if you have a DVD player, go out and get yourself a copy of Dub
Room Special. That way, you can SEE the master at work. It's the best
video for newbies, IMO.

Second, I would suggest that you continue along chronologically from
JABFLA. That would make your next purchases:

Waka/Jawaka
The Grand Wazoo
Overnite Sensation
Apostrophe
Roxy & Elsewhere
One Size Fits All
Bongo Fury
Zoot Allures

Then, buy Lather, Joe's Garage, and Shut Up 'N' Play Yer Guitar.

After that, any order is fine, (but for God's sake, make Francesco
Zappa your LAST purchase, if you buy it AT ALL).

Have fun! Don't be a stranger.

I sort of agree with this, although I'd prioritize OSFA and Roxy over
all of the others (and put Zoot and Bongo behind things like Joe's
Garage and Lather). Again, though, it's a matter of individual taste.

Last? Easy. Decide what part of the 80s you like least and avoid it.

Hey Rolf,
I was serious about my recommendation. I work with lot of folks who
don't care for most of Frank's music but Joe's Corsage got a lot of
favorable comments. A lot of these people enjoy Freak Out too and have
asked to borrow both.
Noe of the other Joe's series were well received.

It sounds like you're on your way to buying all the albums. However, if
you want guidance as to what to buy next, based on what you especially
like of the albums you already have, see
<http://www.arf.ru/cgi-bin/Next/next.cgi>.

Other than that, the only advice I'll give you is don't wait thirty-four
years to get Imaginary Diseases.

If you like SATLTSADW, you might want to get Joes Garage. If you like JFH,
you could also get Frank's masterpiece CP-3.

Plus, the 88 line-up is a real treat, so TBYNHIYL and MaJNH would be good
contributions to your collection.

If you just starting out, you also might want to go through the YCDTOSA
series and find your favorite bands and then concentrate on releases from
those eras.

Best wishes,

Pete

Roxy & Elsewhere and a bag of weed. 8 track if possible.

True. There really is no wrong answer. We all took this journey
differently.

Overnite Sensation and Apostrophe are must haves because they contain
material that many non-FZ fans recognize. If you say your a Zappa fan
and somebody talks about "Dirty Love" or "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow",
it can make you look stupid if you tell them you've never heard those.
I mean, few Zeppelin fans listen to "Stairway To Heaven" anymore, but
they still know the song inside and out.

Lather is only 27$ at zappa.com (not bad for 3 cds) and since you MUST
go there to get Imaginary Diseases....

The current prices on Amazon and CD Universe are comparable, but you
can't get Imaginary Diseases at either.
